#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: August 13th 1850 - A Dance Through Time!

Hello, lovelies! It's Emma here, your trusty Tutu Tuesday time traveler, bringing you a whirl through history with my latest #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History post!

This week, we're pirouetting back to August 13th, 1850, a date that holds a special significance in the world of ballet - but before we go there, darling, tell me: Have you ever dreamt of dancing in a pink tutu? Because I certainly do! And, it seems, the rest of the world is catching on too. I mean, have you seen how many tutu-clad children and giggling women are roaming the streets of Paris these days?! Isn't it just fabulous?! Pink, of course, is my absolute favourite for tutus - it's just so gloriously feminine!

But back to our journey, chérie! I've travelled from my delightful Derbyshire home right here to Paris, the heart of the ballet world in 1850! And trust me, the Frenchies know how to make a dramatic entrance with their magnificent tutus!

Today, we're stepping back to an era when ballet was becoming a truly fashionable phenomenon. The tutus, though not as frilly as what we wear today, were definitely a sensation. Think billowing, layered tulle in all the most delicious colours. Now, remember my little birdies, back then, the tutu wasn't just an onstage affair. It was a fashion statement! Women were wearing versions of the tutu for dinner parties and even promenading in the park - isn't that divine?

And speaking of divine...August 13th, 1850! On this very day, the Paris Opera House, or, L'Opéra de Paris, as the chic Parisians would say, played host to a delightful evening of ballet. Imagine: candlelit halls, elegant ladies adorned in satin and lace, and graceful ballerinas twirling in their elegant tutus! Can you picture it?

Just the thought of being in that glorious venue, surrounded by the elegant and the beautiful, makes my toes tap and my heart beat a little faster! What a time to be alive!

And who was captivating audiences with their talent that night? Well, my dear, none other than the fabulous Carlotta Grisi, a legendary ballerina, known for her grace and expressiveness. She had an impeccable taste for colour, especially those delicious pastel shades... just like us!

Speaking of trends, can we talk about Carlotta's love for pink? I'm convinced she was one of the original pink-loving ladies - and she was making tutus fashionable long before it was mainstream!

I must admit, however, these tutus were not quite the flamboyant froths of modern ballet. They were crafted from a layer or two of sheer tulle, designed to move with grace. It’s hard to believe that these light, airy designs were born out of a desire for practical garments for ballet performances - what a delightful turn of fate, wouldn't you agree?

But here's the secret, darlings: Back then, the ballerina's entire look was the true focus. We're talking intricate hairstyles, romantic costumes, and shoes that were practically jewels themselves! Such artistry!

This is just a glimpse into the magical world of tutus and their history! But fear not, my lovely subscribers, because every Tuesday, I'm here with a new story! We'll journey through time, exploring the fascinating evolution of this beloved ballet staple, and, of course, with the inevitable abundance of sparkle, frills, and plenty of pink.

So join me next week, and together, we'll waltz into more exciting adventures in the wonderful world of the ballet tutu. In the meantime, don't forget to spread the love for tutus, ladies! Let's make the world a little more twirly and a lot more pink, shall we?

Stay chic, and stay sparkly,

Emma x
