#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - December 17th, 1850 (Post 990)
Hello, my lovely Tutu Twirlers! It's Emma here, your pink-tutu-clad guide to all things ballet! It's #TutuTuesday, which means we're taking a twirl back in time to explore the evolution of the most delightful garment in the world - the ballet tutu. Buckle up, darlings, because today we're hopping on the train (the choo-choo kind, mind you!) to a special date in ballet history: December 17th, 1850.
Let's start by picturing the scene: the year is 1850, a time when the romance of ballet was reaching fever pitch across Europe, particularly in Paris, darling. I'm picturing ladies with bonnets and gents sporting frock coats, all eager for a dose of elegant movement and exquisite storytelling on the stage. Imagine, if you will, the soft lighting, the hushed anticipation before the curtains rise, and the magnificent stage setting – oh, how the excitement fills the air!
You see, in 1850, ballet was more than just a performance; it was an art form of elegance, grace, and beauty. This was the era when romanticism was truly embraced, and in that beautiful and graceful spirit, our beloved tutu was being born!
Before the romantic period, ballerinas weren't twirling around in these fluffy wonders. They wore, believe it or not, quite restricting, heavy, floor-length dresses with lots of layers. Imagine how uncomfortable that must have been! Not exactly ideal for pirouettes, is it?
So, what led to the magical transformation? Well, let's step back a bit and journey to the heart of the romantic period. The ballets of this time were like beautifully crafted stories – tales of passion, love, and enchantment. You can imagine the romantic, yearning tunes! Oh, the waltzing, the tender gestures, the storytelling through movement... and suddenly, those long skirts became a barrier to expressing this delicate story in full bloom!
Cue the innovation! It was around this time, dear readers, that a new silhouette took hold in ballet, and the ballerina’s figure began to truly take centre stage! This new form took on a streamlined elegance, allowing for effortless movement, light, and graceful transitions. Yes, the tutu was about to make its debut. Imagine that, my dear twirlers, the tiny, feathery, gloriously graceful skirt was just around the corner. The year is 1850! We're practically in the thick of the transition!
The year 1850 marks a very exciting point in the history of ballet and its garments. The year was punctuated by iconic premieres across Europe. Take the delightful production of Giselle, in which Marie Taglioni – a dancer, known for her breathtaking leaps – donned a shorter, more elegant skirt with multiple layers of tulle, a skirt that would revolutionise the entire ballet world.
Think of it, my darlings, a tutu as the stars aligned, the music, the delicate, sweeping story! That little wisp of tulle would be seen by a generation, becoming synonymous with ballet itself. No longer were there heavy, trailing skirts; instead, we saw the birth of this beautiful, delicate, wispy shape!
Now, I know what you're thinking – where was pink in all of this? While we might be used to the idea of ballerinas adorned in a variety of vibrant colors nowadays, back in 1850, the tutu palette was fairly muted. Think soft whites, creamy yellows, pale pinks and blush tones – the colour palette of romance itself, you might say! They did embrace the delicacy of these soft tones to complement the elegance of the new tutus.
So, my loves, if you’re ever attending a ballet performance, remember that tiny, magical, fluttering wisp of tulle! That’s no mere garment; it’s a piece of history, telling us of a change that saw grace, light, and beauty truly taking to the stage.
We are now well and truly immersed in 1850. You see, dear Tutu Twirlers, I’ve found myself in Paris! Paris is a true delight; I was entranced by the stunning opera house, the grand theatre itself!
This week, it's the opera ballet – “Le Lac des Cygnes”! The stunning production left me in a dreamy state for days after the final bow. It really is no wonder ballet is so celebrated, the costumes and the set – oh, my!
My Parisian travels weren’t just for ballet performances, though. You know me! The shopping! A girl can’t visit Paris without an extensive look around the beautiful, elegant boutiques for the latest styles. From feathered bonnets and the delicate, ethereal fabrics of lace gowns, the streets of Paris ooze elegance and beauty!
Speaking of fabrics, I've picked up the most exquisite lace fabrics to give me ideas for the designs for my next collection. Pink is going to be big next season; you can be sure of it. Why not channel a ballerina’s grace and opt for a fabulous tutu in the lightest, most delicate shades of pink. Or even incorporate some delicate floral lace, like the ones they have on display in the Parisian boutiques! It would look fantastic! Oh, the excitement of design. Let’s keep it glamorous!
It's a wonderful thing, isn’t it, to look at this history of dance and realize that it all began, much like today, in a desire to express the full grace and beauty of movement. It was the little changes that brought us the tutu as we know it – those delicate tweaks, those romantic ballets – these are the stories behind the beautiful tulle twirling on stage!
And it’s not just the history of tutus that makes me giddy with joy, it’s seeing the influence the tutu has had on modern fashion. From red carpet designs to wedding dresses and evening wear, we see tutus echoing through trends in clothes around the world. There's just something about a tutu that says, "I'm feeling fabulous and ready for a spin!" So if you're feeling daring, I encourage you to add some tulle to your own outfit! And if you're looking for a special occasion dress or even just a touch of ballerina chic for a night out, search for those gorgeous, playful tulle layers and try the 'ballet dress' trend! This really has been the tutu’s most spectacular season!
And now, let’s leave Paris behind and return to England. This time it’s by train; I have to confess that I love a good, luxurious carriage ride! There’s nothing like that clattering over tracks to set my creative juices flowing.
I have some exciting news for you. I’m hosting a “pink-tutu dance class!” Right here, in our Derbyshire town, we are bringing ballet to the masses and inviting the community to take their first steps! Yes, “The pink Tutu Ball,” where everyone wears their favourite shade of pink in their favourite fluffy tulle. Now there’s a sight that will be worth the time travel!
But that’s for another #TutuTuesday! And until then, I encourage you to don a tutu, let your imagination fly, and twirl your way through the week with the same elegant flair as those graceful dancers in Paris. I can't wait to hear all about your ballerina adventures.
Stay stylish, stay joyful, and above all, stay fabulous!
With love and a flurry of tulle, Emma xxx
