#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - Post #1034 - 1851-10-21: A Blast from the Past!
Hello darlings, and welcome to this week’s edition of my #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History blog! I hope you’re all feeling inspired by the elegant twirls of ballet and the delicate flutter of a tutu, because we’re about to embark on a fascinating journey to a different time…a time when tutus were still finding their own elegant rhythm on the stage!
As you know, I absolutely love to explore history through the magical lens of ballet and fashion. It’s so fun to see how the styles evolved over the years and to learn about the fascinating figures who helped to make ballet the dazzling art form it is today. Today, we’re traveling back in time, via the wonderfully comfortable (and perfectly pink, naturally) carriages of my trusty train, to the grand year of 1851!
*Ooh, Fancy! *
It’s funny to think how far ballet has come, right? Back in 1851, the tutus weren’t quite as grand and billowing as the romantic masterpieces we see on stage today. This era was a time of transition! The "Romantic tutu" was starting to take hold, bringing a breath of fresh air and delicate grace to the ballet stage.
Picture this… A ballerina taking center stage, her figure enveloped in a cloud of shimmering white tulle. No longer the stiff, formal attire of earlier times. This new look was all about flowing, ethereal movement! Think elegant layers of soft, ethereal tulle, a world away from the corseted dresses and heavier fabrics that were fashionable elsewhere! It's almost like the tutu was trying to say: "Hey, let's see more movement! Let's embrace the grace of the human body!"
1851: A Milestone for Fashion & Ballet
On this very day, October 21st, 1851, a huge event took place: The opening of the Great Exhibition in London! This extraordinary affair showcased a glorious array of inventions and designs, from across the world, creating a buzz of excitement that would revolutionize many aspects of life, fashion included.
You can imagine the extraordinary costumes that might have been on display there! So much excitement and inspiration! Did tutus take the centre stage? Not exactly, but the general movement toward lighter, flowing styles surely made a ripple, creating a shift towards elegance and ethereal charm that influenced every aspect of design and dance.
A Journey Through Time…and Pink!
Of course, it wouldn’t be #TutuTuesday without a pinch of my favorite color! I simply adore the history of the pink tutu…it's truly fascinating. Pink started to emerge as a color used for tutus and other costumes around the latter part of the 19th century! While not quite in the spotlight yet in 1851, its beautiful shades were starting to cast a glow on ballet.
And isn’t it truly lovely? It symbolizes so much – grace, lightness, femininity. For me, it’s a colour that whispers: "Dream big, and let your creativity take flight."
Why not explore this amazing history by embracing a tutu today?
I'm off on my next adventure now, seeking out some pink wonders to inspire my latest tutu collection! Let's make some more Tutu Memories and embrace the beauty of a tutu every single day! Don't forget to follow my ballet tutu history adventures! #TutuTuesday
