#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Ballet History - 1852!

Post #1051: Buckle Up, Tutu Fans! We’re taking a journey back to 1852.

Hello, my darlings! Emma here, your pink tutu-wearing time traveler, ready to whisk you away on another thrilling historical adventure through the world of ballet. This week, we're diving back into the heart of 1852. It’s an important year! You know how I love my pink tutus, and what's more important to a tutu-lover than the origins of this iconic garment? We’re getting closer and closer to the grand dame herself, the tutu as we know it.

Time Traveling Tutu Tips!
You know, travelling back in time can be a bit of a whirlwind! It's like going on a grand tour without a map, but so much more glamorous, wouldn't you agree? My advice? Always pack a beautiful pink tutu and some comfortable shoes! You never know what delightful opportunities might arise in a time gone by.

Now, picture this, darling! The year is 1852, and all eyes are on London. Imagine elegant horse-drawn carriages dashing through the cobbled streets, gentlemen in top hats, and ladies adorned in beautiful gowns. The scent of smoke from the factory chimneys mixed with the heady scent of lilies in a flower stall nearby

Oh, to be whisked away to that era! In a whirlwind of petticoats, ribbons, and elegant gowns, it's like stepping out of a classic novel! And if you are ever fortunate enough to travel to London, a visit to the Theatre Royal is a must!

This is where we find ourselves, my dear tutu-lovers! The heart of the ballet world, buzzing with anticipation. There are two stars shining especially brightly – Madame Carlotta Grisi and her charming dance partner, the dashing, elegant Lucien Petipa. Get ready, for we are about to discuss one of the most pivotal moments in tutu history.

The Ballet Bonanza!

What a delight to see this duo on stage! Madame Carlotta in her mesmerizing La Sylphide, her white tutu softly flitting about her as she twirls across the stage, ethereal and enchanting. And Mr. Petipa a perfect match for her elegant movement, bringing a dashing elegance to the scene. I just wish we had some photos! It must have been utterly breathtaking.

The London theatre audience, captivated by the intricate steps, were completely entranced, wouldn’t you agree? That delicate, romantic flair is what ballet was all about back then, a true ballet fairytale.

As always, it’s not all rosy - though some are praising Madame Carlotta for her artistry, some believe her dress choice was a tad risquĂ© for the times! (Just imagine what they’d say about a hot pink tutu, lol!).

But let’s focus on the exciting bit – this show sparked a fashion revolution – with more and more dancers adopting a new softness to their tutus, incorporating lace and light fabrics. From dramatic romantic dances, the look moved away from the big stiff **“polonaise” styles and became much more floaty, soft, and graceful. And a lot of the dances even featured those beautiful ribbons that we know so well and love!

Imagine, a flurry of pink tulle fluttering about as I twirl, my shoes tapping gently on the polished floorboards
 Oh my, how simply delightful!

Now, it wouldn't be a Tutu Tuesday blog without a touch of fashion and shopping, would it? What better place than Paris to satisfy my love for clothes? With such delightful tutus, corsetry, and beautiful accessories at my fingertips, who could possibly resist a quick pit stop for a little retail therapy? I especially adore those beautiful Parisian hats with feathers, wouldn't you?

Looking ahead

So, my darling tutu-lovers, how did we get here? What can we take away from this adventure in 1852? The ballet world was ever-changing, and 1852 gave birth to an elegance and artistry we still adore today. From the enchanting stories of Madame Grisi and the graceful tutus, the journey to modern dance began right here, a mere 171 years ago!

But one question remains: * How far away are we from that iconic, dreamy, *full-length romantic tutu, the kind we see on those famous ballerinas we all admire so much? The full-length ballet tutus! That’s what I'm eager to learn, so tune in next week to find out what new adventures await us! Until then, embrace your inner tutu-lover, dance around with happiness, and make the most of your wonderful Tuesday!

Yours in tulle and frills, Emma
