#TutuTuesday: A Peek at the Past, A Peek at the Pink!

#1054

Greetings, darling tutu enthusiasts! Welcome back to your weekly dose of all things tutu, fashion, and fabulous – I’m your ever-so-pink-obsessed ballerina blogger, Emma, bringing you the latest from the world of tutus, both past and present.

This Tuesday, we’re taking a little trip back in time! Our trusty time-travel tutu (a marvel, I tell you!) has whisked us away to 9th March 1852. I always get so excited for a little bit of history – it's always fun to see how those iconic tutus evolved!

Imagine it: London in 1852

London’s bustling streets were full of carriages, ladies in long dresses with bonnets, and the gentle hum of everyday life. But nestled amidst all this was something very special, a glimpse into a world of grace and elegance: the ballet!

This date holds particular significance, darlings! For on this very day, the famous dancer Marie Taglioni was putting on a show of La Sylphide, a performance that literally turned the world of ballet on its head!

(Don’t worry, I’ll catch you up if you’re not familiar with La Sylphide just yet!).

Now, what made this performance so ground-breaking? You guessed it: the tutu! Marie’s iconic, billowing tutu – not just a skirt but a symphony of layered fabric - was the ultimate expression of feminine movement. This groundbreaking look redefined how we envisioned ballet. Gone were the cumbersome skirts and corseted bodices that had weighed down the dancers previously! Now, they could spin and leap with newfound freedom!

(We owe you a big thank you, Marie!).

This lightweight and billowing masterpiece of a skirt created a silhouette, a vision that could literally soar on stage! Imagine, darlings! Gone were the constraints of previous outfits - the sheer artistry of ballet could now truly take flight! The shorter skirts made every plié and jeté so much more captivating.

And who can resist a bit of pink? Let’s be honest – every fashion-loving girl’s favourite colour! Just picture this: the stage illuminated by soft candlelight (electric lights hadn’t arrived on the scene just yet!), and Marie Taglioni gracefully dancing in a pink tutu under the gaze of the elite, enchanting everyone with her ethereal beauty and dance moves. A moment to remember indeed!

The Ballet Bubble

You see, dear readers, the history of the tutu goes way beyond just its physical shape - it’s a history of progress, artistry, and, well, of course, femininity!

By now, I’m sure many of you will have popped over to www.pink-tutu.com. You must have seen just how much tutus have evolved in the time since Marie's time. Now, from that romantic-era La Sylphide to today's contemporary tutus – we’ve had all shapes and sizes.

We've gone from the long, flowing, tiered tulle skirt with those impossibly tight bodices, all the way to short, fluffy tutus, even streetwear tutus, complete with bold colors and designs! The beauty of it all, my dears, is that tutus are now accessible to everyone. We can all, at least in my book, be ballerinas with that pink, twirly perfection around us!

A Few Bits About La Sylphide

Since this was the show on the 9th of March, I just had to share a little something about it with you.

This delightful story of a sylph (a mischievous spirit of the air) falling in love with a young man tells a tale of yearning and the inevitable, bittersweet tragedy. Marie was captivating! It's one of those stories where the dance itself is practically a part of the narrative.

This fairytale about the dangers of human attachment for the ethereal and the fleeting nature of life really captured everyone's imaginations back in the day - It's still quite poignant, if I do say so myself, and remains incredibly popular today. You know, sometimes, I think the classic stories do best to withstand the passing of time. They say, the older they are, the better they are!

Let's Go Back on the Time Train

Now, to think, my dear readers, all this took place a mere 171 years ago, and tutus are as popular as ever. This beautiful item, like our favourite songs and books, has somehow become a part of our collective memories, and each tutu brings a smile to our face - how wonderful!

Don’t worry, dear readers - I have so much more to share with you! And I'll make sure to have my time-travel tutu all ready for next Tuesday! After all, we’re on a continuous quest for the perfect tutu! The best part of time travel is experiencing tutus across time!

And don’t forget, if you want to have fun with me in the realm of the tutu and dance, leave a comment and tell me which of these historical eras you’d love to visit with me. Until then, keep twirling and always remember: even in this modern day and age, there's always room for a bit of pink.

Yours,

Emma, the Pink Tutu Blogger!
