Tutu Tuesday: #1070 - 29th June 1852
Hello darlings! It’s Emma, your tutu-obsessed time-travelling ballerina, back for another jaunty journey through the history of our beloved ballet tutus! And this week we're dipping our toes (and tulle, of course!) into the glamorous world of 1852, a year brimming with theatrical magic and elegant fashion.
Today’s trip landed me right here in the heart of Paris, the city that oozes elegance, and let me tell you, it’s a sartorial haven for any tutu aficionado! From the grand opera houses to the intimate salons, everyone here is positively buzzing with a passion for the beautiful.
And who could blame them? The stage is awash with breathtaking ballets - the iconic Swan Lake was actually making its Parisian premiere in 1852, how divine is that? Just imagine being swept away by the beautiful, graceful movements and the story woven in music and movement. The romanticism, the delicate pointe shoes - just utter enchantment! And you just know they’ll all be wearing some fabulous tutus, the pouf of silk and layers of tulle - pure Parisian elegance, if ever there was!
Now, back to 1852 – what's happening in the world of ballet tutus in the 1850s? Well, imagine this: tulle, delicate, shimmering tulle, was really gaining traction. It became THE fabric for a dancer’s costume - lightness, movement, pure enchantment, it's the perfect partner for graceful ballets. And who would have thought, but I heard a whisper that a revolutionary invention is taking the fashion world by storm - the sewing machine! Can you imagine the difference that'll make in the world of tutus? I'm dreaming of a tutu utopia!
What were fashionistas like me wearing on June 29th 1852? Now, let's be clear, a ballet dancer's costume on stage was certainly the peak of fashion - all those delicate details, the layered tulle, the perfect pointe shoes, it's truly breathtaking.
But even outside of the theatre, the ladies of Paris were embracing a beautiful trend - the Crinoline! This clever design gave dresses a breathtaking, full shape. Talk about dramatic! Imagine - the delicate ruffles of the crinoline adding a layer of romance to a classic, fitted skirt. It just begs for a pink tutu as an extra touch, doesn't it?
The shops are absolutely brimming with exquisite fabrics - silk, satin, velvet, lace – it’s truly inspiring for a girl who loves to create the perfect tutus! And can you believe it? The latest innovation in Paris is silk dye, so the colours we’re seeing are more vibrant than ever! I’m absolutely dying to use that bold new fuchsia pink - just picture it, a tutu so perfectly pink, with a subtle shimmering shine! It’s going to revolutionize the tutu world!
I’m just giddy thinking about the creativity and innovation swirling around us in 1852! Who knew the past was this thrilling? I just can’t wait to visit another exciting time era in ballet tutu history!
Now, tell me, darlings, what's YOUR favourite decade in ballet history? I'm just bursting to hear from you - tweet your replies to #TutuTuesday and tell me what inspires you in the world of ballet!
Until next time, keep twirling in style!
Yours,
Emma (Wearing a vintage-inspired pink tutu and a grin so wide, you can practically see the tulle!)
