#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 1853-03-08 - The Dawn of the Tutu!

Bonjour, mes chéries! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, Pink-Tutu.com! It’s Tuesday, which means it’s time to waltz into our weekly #TutuTuesday time travel adventure! 🩰 And oh my goodness, this week's jaunt has me positively giddy with excitement! Get your pinkest ribbons ready, girls, because we’re dipping our toes into the exciting world of… the early, early, early history of the tutu! 💖

I’m Emma, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu-clad ballerina extraordinaire. My life mission, you ask? To convince every single person on this beautiful planet to wear a pink tutu at least once! Every Tuesday, I use my secret time-traveling tutu (don't tell anyone, but it's actually a vintage, hand-stitched beauty) to visit the past, uncovering the origins of this magical garment and bringing its history to life. And trust me, darlings, the early history of the tutu is like a delightful box of bonbons - filled with delicious details and enchanting stories! 🍬

March 8th, 1853 – A Ballet Bonanza in Paris! This is where it gets super interesting! Today marks the premiere of a ballet called “La Fille Mal Gardée,” a charming story of a farmer’s daughter who chooses love over duty. 👩🏻‍🌾 Now, the big thing about this ballet, beyond its adorable plot, is that this was the very first time that we saw the now-iconic *short, billowing, *tutu worn on stage.

Imagine a dress that practically dances around you! 🤩 Before this, ballerinas were swathed in yards and yards of fabric, which, let’s be honest, got in the way of all those fancy pirouettes and graceful leaps. Our brave, talented ballerinas literally pioneered the ‘tutu’ as we know it! Their revolutionary movement made those perfectly poised leaps and spins possible.

This incredible, whimsical change in fashion is thanks to M. Carlo Blasis, a French ballet teacher who is a real fashion pioneer in his own right! He re-imagined the design of a ballet costume, and in doing so, transformed the world of dance! The short, flowing tulle skirts he dreamt up made all those intricate movements on stage so much easier and beautifully highlighted the dancer’s incredible grace and elegance - imagine, dancing on air! ☁️

Fashion Forward! The short tutus quickly became the iconic staple for any self-respecting ballerina. You’ve probably seen them a million times – all those stunning swirls of fabric dancing around ballerinas’ silhouetted bodies. Pure enchantment! ✨ The beauty of the short tutu wasn't just in its practical uses, but it brought out an air of feminine lightness. And I know you, my fellow tutu enthusiasts, appreciate a touch of romance in our fashion choices!

I always feel incredibly inspired by the ballet - it makes my imagination fly like a tutu in the wind! Every move, every gesture captures an emotion so perfectly. And let's be honest, those ballet shows are just stunning! 🎭

The world of ballet and fashion are intertwined, hand in hand. Ballet has given us some of the most timeless and beautiful fashion creations, not only in the realm of dance, but also in our everyday lives. Imagine that the elegant ballerina tutu inspired our modern fashion! The short skirt is still one of the most elegant fashion staples today, don't you think?

My dear, these are just a few of the reasons why I adore our ballet history! 💃🏼 I could go on and on (and on!) about the fashion innovations in the ballet world, but I must say, I wouldn't want to take up too much of your precious time! I wouldn’t be a very good Tutu-ologist if I wasn’t saving a little bit of time travel mystery for next week's adventure! 😉

Oh, and don't forget to share your favourite #TutuTuesday posts with all your friends! I'm always on the lookout for inspiring ballerina fashion enthusiasts.

Until next time, darling! Keep on dancing!
Emma

P.S. This weekend, I’m heading to see “Swan Lake" at the Royal Opera House! 🦢 The stunning costumes and choreography are an absolute feast for the eyes, pure magic in motion!

P.P.S My trip to Derbyshire, where I got my very first tutu from a shop on Bakewell, reminded me about a little tradition! Every Saturday, I make the time for afternoon tea and it is perfectly divine to wear a tutu with a scone! 💖 Let's break down the idea that ballet has to be stuffy, why don't we?! We can have fun in our pink tutus even with afternoon tea! 😉
