#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1853-04-26!
Hello my darling dears! It's Emma here from the depths of your very favourite, www.pink-tutu.com, and today, my darling lovelies, we're travelling back to a very special date in history: April 26th, 1853. This particular day was a corker, you know. Thrilling. As if that wasn't enough, this date just happens to be perfectly aligned with the first recorded performance of The Sleeping Beauty by the illustrious Marius Petipa.
(Do you love ballet history as much as I do? Do you love the sheer grace of a beautifully crafted tutu? If you’re here, then you probably do, but let me just remind you that I adore the way they float in the air, the sheerness, the delicate flutter...oh darling, if you could only see how a ballerina's heart swoons when you truly know the magic of a well-made, fluffy, perfectly constructed tutu!)
Today, dear hearts, we're embarking on a delightful time travel jaunt all the way back to St Petersburg in 1853, and don’t you worry...I'll be arriving in my most stunningly pinkest pink tutu imaginable, because well, darling, why not, right? You see, we've got a very important date with history, and I just had to make it a dazzlingly fabulous occasion! You can bet I'll be watching Tchaikovsky's magical music unfold at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre, just dreaming in my tutu as the choreography swirls in the most exquisitely romantic and elegant of ways! My dearest loves, trust me when I tell you it's utterly bewitching... and if you haven’t seen it...do! My dear readers, trust me: you need to witness this ballet.
But back to the main event...
Oh darling, how can you not be intrigued by this particular date! The sheer glitz and glamour...Oh it's just such an amazing thing, it's absolutely spectacular - and that darling, is what I live for. This was a landmark, you know! 1853: The very first performance of The Sleeping Beauty. (This ballet’s been my favourite since forever and I can't help but tell all my lovely darlings to book yourself tickets! If you need any tutu-piration...go have a quick look on my www.pink-tutu.com, because you are going to need a brand new tutu after this...)
Now...this first ever Sleeping Beauty performance wasn’t just a show; darling, this was history in the making! We all know the glorious music and dancing was magnificent, and it truly brought out the royalty of this period to witness it all. This performance was such an extravaganza and there were so many fabulous members of the Imperial Family in attendance. This particular date had it all. It’s very rare, darling, to see a ballet first. We really were at the very centre of everything...
Imagine it. The Imperial Mariinsky Theatre... Oh darling...all of that history ... the magnificence... just all around us... The pure joy of it all, of being right at the centre of all the excitement! 1853...The first performance of the Sleeping Beauty... It was truly a remarkable moment!
Speaking of Remarkable!
I had the most marvellous time today, because I am off to another ballet show... and...drum roll...this one’s being performed at London’s beautiful Covent Garden. The Royal Opera House! Yes, dear hearts, a truly spectacular venue. I even managed to have lunch in a little tearoom called the The Balcony ...And yes of course I wore a pink tutu!...Oh Darling, It is my thing you know!
