#TutuTuesday: A Peek Into Ballet History - July 19th, 1853 šŸ©°

Welcome back, darlings, to another edition of my #TutuTuesday ballet history blog! It's Emma here, your trusty time-travelling, tutu-obsessed blogger, and today we're going back in time to July 19th, 1853. Now, imagine this - London, the heart of the ballet world, where the air hums with anticipation and the streets thrum with the exciting whisper of upcoming performances.

For those of you who have yet to join me on these delightful historical journeys, let me catch you up: my name is Emma, and I'm a ballet enthusiast from the picturesque Derbyshire countryside. My passion for the art form runs deeper than a swan dive, and so, naturally, I've turned my passion into a profession ā€“ a travelling ballet blogger, chronicling the history of the most beautiful garment ever invented ā€“ the tutu!

I fund my journeys by performing at various ballet troupes around the world. Oh, the adventures I've had! Travelling on steam trains, tasting exotic cuisines, and soaking up the atmosphere of enchanting cities all while donning my favourite pink tutu, what more could a girl ask for?

And speaking of pink, I just adore this colour! It is the most romantic, elegant, and delicate shade, just like the graceful movements of a ballerina. For today's post, I'm rocking a vintage pink tutu, with layers of tulle cascading down like a delicate cloud. I'm certain it would perfectly complement the grandeur of the grand Parisian theatres.

Now, back to July 19th, 1853. The theatre world in London was ablaze with excitement as audiences eagerly awaited The Royal Italian Opera's production of "Faust". Imagine, darling, a performance with a plot as passionate and compelling as the swirling layers of my tulle!

But what about the tutus? You might ask. Well, ladies and gentlemen, this is where the magic starts. Around this time, tutus began to become the cornerstone of the ballerina's attire, shifting from being a decorative accent to the core focus of their costumes.

The ā€œRomantic tutuā€, also known as the ā€œRomantic dressā€ ā€“ think soft, billowing, and flowing tulle ā€“ is taking the ballet world by storm. It gave ballerinas the freedom and lightness to execute complex leaps and twirls, truly enhancing their movements and letting the dance flow. It's a masterpiece of beauty and functionality!

But just imagine the effort that went into creating these exquisite tutus!

A single tutu could have layers upon layers of tulle, sewn together with painstaking precision and detail. You can imagine all the seamstresses working tirelessly, needles flickering like tiny stars in the night as they diligently create these artistic wonders!

What's a "Romantic Tutu" made of, you ask? Imagine tulle, soft and airy as the summer breeze, layers and layers, meticulously chosen for their transparency, colour and texture. Each one expertly sewn, creating a visual masterpiece ā€“ a canvas for the ballerina to create her art.

Just picture those glorious costumes. The ā€œRomantic Tutuā€, with its airy layers, allowed for fluid movements, and the dancers could really fly across the stage. This movement allowed a more lyrical and expressive style, taking audiences on an ethereal journey alongside the ballerinas!

On this date, while the audience gasped at the sheer magic of ā€œFaustā€, their eyes would have been drawn to the mesmerizing movements of the ballerinas. And how could they not? Those ā€œRomantic tutusā€ with their exquisite elegance, lightness and captivating allure would have set their hearts racing, capturing the hearts of the audience and becoming a ballet fashion sensation.

Speaking of fashion, 1853 was a fantastic time to be a fashion lover! It was the era of Victorian elegance where the details were everything ā€“ and it just so happens that my favourite accessory perfectly aligns with that: the pink tutu!

Imagine strolling along the boulevards of London or Paris, spotting the most incredible hats, bonnets, and intricate dresses with the most dazzling colours. Such sophistication! But to truly stand out from the crowd, to add that extra sprinkle of sparkle, just add a pink tutu!

Now, don't think I'm suggesting we wear our tutus for afternoon tea (although, why not? It would definitely be an unforgettable experience!). But perhaps a subtle hint of the romanticism of a tulle tutu can be incorporated into our modern attire.

Perhaps a delicate tulle scarf draped over a chic outfit or a whimsical, pink, ballerina inspired, ballet-themed party with an optional ā€œRomantic Tutuā€ for all the ladies (and even gentlemen!)! I think it would be delightful.

So, my darling ballet-lovers, there you have it! Our quick glimpse into July 19th, 1853. A time of theatrical excitement, stunning ballet costumes and the reign of the ā€œRomantic Tutuā€!
