#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 10th January, 1854! (Post #1150)
Bonjour, mes amies! Welcome back to another week of #TutuTuesday on www.pink-tutu.com, where we dive deep into the fabulous history of the ballet tutu! Iām Emma, your time-travelling ballerina blogger, straight from the heart of Derbyshire. This week, Iāve whizzed myself back to a particularly exciting time in ballet ā the 10th of January, 1854! Just think of all the lovely outfits we might have spied today ā I'm dying to show you all. Letās delve into what makes this day so special, shall we?
Itās a brisk January morning in Paris, the air tinged with the sweet scent of freshly baked croissants, and Iām bundled up in my chicest winter coat, ready to hit the streets. But donāt worry, Iāve snuck my pink tutu underneath for good measure! After all, whatās a time-travelling ballerina without a tutu to twirl in? š
Iāve heard whispers of a sensational new ballet by none other than the renowned choreographer Marius Petipa, titled "Le Corsaire." Just the name alone has me dreaming of daring pirates, swashbuckling swordfights, andā¦ gasps... exquisite costumes! I must see it!
While Iāve got a hunch that tutus might play a prominent role in this enchanting new production, let's take a peek at what other fashion wonders the ladies of 1854 might be wearing, right here on this exciting day in ballet history:
Fashion Focus! The Victorian Waistline: Ladies in 1854, unlike my beloved ballerina predecessors, were embracing a far more voluminous silhouette. They donned billowing skirts and boned corsets, creating that iconic āhourglassā shape. Itās a very different look from the graceful, fluid movements we know from the romantic tutu. However, these trends are the foundations that led to ballet's iconic form! Imagine the struggles of the Victorian ladies trying to dance in those stiff skirts - what an achievement to bring that era's fashion into the elegant ballerina's silhouette!
The Art of the Gown: While we donāt see our contemporary tutu designs yet, the gowns worn in 1854 were true works of art! Rich velvets, silk satins, and ornate lace, often in deep, elegant hues, were the preferred choices for elegant soirees and theatre outings. I envision delicate floral embroidery and perhaps some opulent beading - all crafted by skilled hands. Oh, to get my hands on such a beautiful gown, even if I did prefer a splash of pink!
Beyond Ballet: As I wander through the streets of Paris, I'm also noticing the exquisite fashion on offer from the artisans of the day! From chic milliners crafting elaborate hats to the fashionable shoemakers, Parisian fashion is a feast for the eyes!
I can practically feel the anticipation of "Le Corsaire" simmering throughout the city. Imagine the buzz of chatter, the rustling of silk dresses, and the hushed anticipation before the curtain rises.
Itās a day to be remembered for more than just its fashion delights, however. On this very day, 1854, another incredible moment took place: a revolutionary design for a revolutionary vehicle: the first āhorsecar" pulled into New York City. Imagine it ā an elegant vehicle pulling carriages for transportation! This technological breakthrough surely made the transportation of fine fashion a smoother, more accessible experience! And just think about it, this transportation helped ballet become a cultural powerhouse as it spread around the globe!
Later today, I'll be whisking myself to the Grand ThĆ©Ć¢tre de l'OpĆ©ra National de Paris for "Le Corsaire". My mind is brimming with dreams of daring pirates, romantic ballets, and exquisite costumes! I hope to discover clues in the early stages of this wonderful style! Of course, as a good ballerina, I shall also take time to visit the dance studios and learn a few new steps ā the steps are often where fashion flourishes too. Who knows what treasures I may discover tucked away amongst the delicate silks and chiffons?
Oh, how I love these historical fashion trips! And do keep your eyes peeled, my darlings! Itās my mission to encourage every last one of you to embrace the magic of the tutu - it doesn't have to be just for dancers, after all!
Until next weekās #TutuTuesday adventure, keep twirling!
Your fashionably time-travelling friend, Emma
