Tutu Tuesday: A Glimpse Into The Past!

#1218

Hello lovelies! It's Emma, your trusty pink tutu-clad time traveler, and I'm back with another #TutuTuesday! This week we're stepping back in time to 1st May 1855, and believe me, it's a time of exciting change in the world of ballet!

It’s rather chilly here in Paris, a far cry from my sunny Derbyshire summers! But despite the cold, the City of Lights is buzzing with artistic energy, especially in the world of ballet. After all, I am here to catch the premiere of La Esmeralda, the newest work by Jules Perrot, the king of ballet. And I'm telling you, lovelies, you won't believe the sensation!

Firstly, this is not your traditional ballet performance. We are not in the grand opera houses of yesteryear. We are in the Opéra-Comique, a new, intimate, and modern theatre space, right in the heart of the city. It's so chic, the perfect place to showcase a ballet that, while inspired by Victor Hugo's story, has a life and energy all its own!

And the story, oh darling, it is utterly captivating. The dramatic tale of a gypsy girl caught in a tangle of love, intrigue, and betrayal – just my cup of tea, you know? The acting, the costumes, and the dance itself are captivating, a real story brought to life with such finesse. It is clear that Monsieur Perrot, ever the master of theatrical performance, has crafted a masterpiece.

But back to our beloved tutus. Imagine this: the ballerina playing Esmeralda is wearing a tutu! Oh, it’s so beautifully crafted. Layers and layers of delicate netting, falling softly in delicate movement as she spins across the stage. It's not your rigid, old fashioned tutu. It’s lightweight, fluid, and even a bit naughty! Imagine, all that movement on stage - whispers a very different sort of “skirt" than what you'd find in a Parisian salon!

This, my darlings, is a revolution! The movement of the dance is freed, no longer restrained by a stiff, cumbersome costume. The beauty of the dancers’ movements is accentuated by the soft, ethereal flow of the tutu. And trust me, the audience is completely enthralled.

What’s most remarkable is this is just one small example of the big changes sweeping through the world of ballet in these very exciting years!

And my lovelies, don't think that the tutu evolution has been easy! It has been a journey of experimentation and passion, from the earliest tutus inspired by the Spanish faldas to the full length “Romantic tutus" worn by dancers such as Carlotta Grisi in the 1840s.

You can feel the changes here in Paris! With each premiere, each new costume, and each thrilling performance, we are witnessing the evolution of the tutu as a symbol of both freedom and artistry. It’s truly captivating.

Speaking of captivating, Paris is a shopping haven, of course! I was able to find the most exquisite ribbon, a shade of pink, darling, that would have you fainting! Perfect for my new project... (shhhh… can’t reveal the secret yet, my lovelies. It is top secret.) But you'll just have to wait to find out more, promise.

And my train is just waiting to take me on a thrilling journey to the next ballet premiere!

Remember, my sweet lovelies, tutus are about freedom, expression, and joy! And that, my dear friends, is a sentiment we can all embrace.

Until next time, stay glamorous, stay fashionable, and never stop wearing a pink tutu!

Love, Emma

XOXO
