#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1856-04-08!
Post Number: 1267
Hello, my darlings! Welcome back to another fabulous #TutuTuesday! Today we’re travelling back in time to 1856-04-08. Imagine the excitement! Think elegant carriages pulling up outside grand opera houses, the scent of lilies and the twinkle of gaslights reflecting off luxurious silks and satin… Just glorious! Oh, and the ballet! It was the height of glamour!
This week we’re heading to Paris, darling. Because…Paris! The heart of fashion, the centre of all things beautiful and refined, a veritable heaven on earth for tutus! Imagine swirling, fluttering tutus, perfectly crafted for those exquisite moves on the stage. It’s not just the tutus though, no, dearie, the whole costume is a dream. Think fitted bodices, frills, velvet, shimmering satin and – wait for it! – colour! Absolutely divine, wouldn't you say?
Now, back to our journey. We're standing just outside the Opéra Garnier, my dears. This glorious structure is all grandeur and grace. As we step inside, let’s listen for the rustling of skirts and the chatter of ladies all eager to see what delights the ballet has to offer. Can you picture the stage bathed in soft light? I'm practically in a swoon just thinking about it.
So, what were the dancers twirling in back in 1856? Imagine these delicate figures in soft, pale pastel coloured tutus, adorned with dainty embellishments. Think wispy white tulle, delicate ribbons and perhaps a smattering of pearls. I do love the way a touch of sparkle enhances the performance! The tutus of this period, although shorter than what we see today, were absolutely breathtaking.
And what’s on the bill on this fine day, you ask? Oh, wouldn’t you love to know? Let’s just say it was a show that showcased the talents of the ballerinas perfectly. With every twirl, leap, and graceful gesture, the stage practically glowed! I bet it was so exciting, the air must have crackled with anticipation and the applause was likely deafening at the curtain call.
For the modern ballerina, there's something magical about seeing how ballet evolved through the ages. The history of the tutu is such a wonderful story of artistic innovation and sheer beauty.
Now, tell me, what's your favourite ballet costume of all time? Let me know in the comments!
Next week: I'm taking us on another time-traveling adventure! Tune in for more Ballet Tutu History, dearies! Until then, why not grab your most gorgeous tutu and take a twirl around the house? You never know what delightful dance your day might hold!
