Tutu Tuesday #1292: A Glimpse Back to 1856: Where Elegance Met Ballet!

Hello, my darling tutu-lovers! It’s your favourite pink-loving, twirling Emma, back again for another dazzling #TutuTuesday adventure! 🩰

Today, we're stepping into a time machine and heading back to 30th September 1856, the heart of a ballet world undergoing a most fascinating transformation. Picture a London awash in gaslight and bustle, with horse-drawn carriages clinking through cobblestone streets. Fancy hats bobbing, and elegant ladies in their bonnets are heading towards the Royal Opera House, eager for a night of entertainment and artistry. It's a time when ballet is evolving from its courtly origins to embrace new heights of technique and drama, and – believe me – the tutus are already starting to make a statement!

My time-traveling outfit today? A fluffy pink tulle tutu, cascading in tiers, with a delicate bodice of blush-coloured satin, all perfectly complimented by a darling little pink shawl for a touch of Victorian elegance. I even found a charming pair of vintage white boots with lace-up accents for my ballet shoes - very on-trend, my dears! 🌸

So, what was happening in the world of ballet on this particular date? Let's go back to the Royal Opera House. This September 30th, we might have been fortunate enough to catch a performance of “Giselle” (perhaps even with the great Carlotta Grisi in the starring role!), a ballet that had swept the continent just a few years prior. This is the era of the Romantic ballet, where passion, ethereal grace, and the use of swirling tutus (a definite improvement from the panniers worn before!) are all the rage. We are on the cusp of a true explosion of movement, where ballerinas become ethereal sylphs flitting across the stage in dramatic leaps and graceful movements. It’s a time for tutus to truly shine!

Speaking of tutus, they're undergoing their own mini-revolution! Gone are the stiff, cage-like crinolines and heavy skirts. Ballerinas are embracing airy, lightweight tutus made of delicate fabrics. Remember that word 'tulle' I mentioned earlier? That was just being invented, making our favourite frothy garments even lighter and more expressive. I wouldn't have thought that fashion could evolve this fast, even in my time!

Even in this time of grand change, fashion isn't forgotten. I had to take a peek into the fashionable shops around the Opera House - my passion for vintage fashion has NO bounds! Can you imagine silk shawls in the richest colours? Delicate lace, embroidered dresses with puffed sleeves and full skirts – it’s enough to make any tutu-loving heart swoon. My heart yearns to collect some treasures to recreate these stunning pieces!

Oh, but what would this day be without a bit of travel? There was no dashing off in an airplane back to Derbyshire - no, my dears, my adventure takes me on a scenic train ride, chugging through the British countryside in a vintage railway carriage. Imagine steaming past rolling hills, quaint villages and stately homes! The windows let in the warm light of the setting sun. There’s something about the slow pace of a journey like this that allows the creativity to flow freely - a beautiful feeling that resonates even with all this vintage flair around me.

While there's nothing quite like seeing ballet live, there's also a charming charm to the vintage performances in 1856! Picture small, intimate theaters illuminated by candlelight, the smell of gaslights mixing with the excitement of the audience, and a captivating story unfolding on the stage! It's a world of wonder and elegance, reminding us of the true power of the arts and how ballet connects us to a timeless expression of beauty.

My love for vintage tutus doesn't end there! As much as I enjoy my time travels, I find myself drawn to the current evolution of tutu-wearing too! My heart truly flutters whenever I see those amazing ballerina costumes - the dazzling jewels, the glittering sequins, and, of course, the gorgeous tulle in all its billowing glory! From contemporary dance to Broadway musicals, tutus continue to mesmerize audiences!

But that’s it from me for this week! I shall leave you, my darling readers, to continue dreaming of tulle, twirling in pink and perhaps even stepping out for a bit of ballet of your own!

Don't forget to share your own tutu adventures in the comments! And most importantly, spread the love of pink tutus! Because remember, even if you're not on stage, there's a little ballerina in every one of us!

Until next #TutuTuesday, dear readers!

Warmly, Emma xo
