Tutu Tuesday: #1319 - A Trip Back to 1857!
Hello darlings!
Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, where tutus are the ultimate expression of grace and elegance! This week, for our Tutu Tuesday journey, we're stepping back in time, all the way to 7th April 1857. Imagine the excitement!
Now, you might think that tutus weren't a thing back then. Well, my lovelies, that's where you'd be oh so wrong! This is Paris we're talking about, and as any fashionista worth her salt knows, Paris is always a step ahead. And while our beloved tulle skirts were just starting to bloom (pun intended!), the fashion world was certainly awash in frills, ruffles, and layers of dreamy fabric.
Think Marie Antoinette and you'll get the picture - lots of silk, extravagant gowns, and a touch of that rococo flair. So, while a modern, perfectly structured tutu wasn't exactly taking the stage yet, imagine a delicate skirt made from layers of gauze or lace, perhaps even a bit of velvet, worn over a silk petticoat - just heavenly!
What was happening in 1857?
Fashion-wise, it was all about colour! Bright, bold colours, often in contrasting patterns, were the trend. Think deep reds, vivid blues, and sunny yellows. And, naturally, pink had a starring role! Pink, my loves, has always been the epitome of femininity, and it was just as beloved in the 19th century as it is today.
While the ballet was already gaining momentum (especially here in Paris!), it wasn't the all-consuming passion it is today. It was more about graceful movements and elegant costumes, with emphasis on long flowing lines. A far cry from the athletic feats we see today, but still wonderfully beautiful!
Oh, and the opera!
You see, the opera was huge in 1857! Think Gounod's Faust having its premiere in Paris, and imagine the magnificent costumes, the lavish settings, the dazzling performances. It was the ultimate form of entertainment and a source of constant inspiration for fashion trends.
What about travel?
Trains were becoming more and more popular. A bit of a slower journey than the high-speed marvels we have now, but oh, what a glorious way to travel! The elegance of the railway carriage, the opportunity for fashionable ladies to display their latest ensembles, the sheer anticipation of reaching a new destination - it was an experience in itself!
And me? I imagine I'd be hopping on that very train, headed for the opera or the ballet, with a little pink accessory of my own! Imagine a lovely bonnet with a delicate pink tulle veil, or maybe a shawl adorned with pink floral motifs.
You know, as I travel through time, one thing becomes clearer than ever: the desire for beauty and femininity is timeless! Just as those ladies of the past yearned for stylish garments, so too do we today!
So, my darling readers, embrace your inner Victorian lady for a day, and dare to add a touch of pink to your outfits! Whether it's a pretty pink ribbon, a charming floral broach, or a dash of pink lipstick, remember pink never goes out of style!
Until next time,
