#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Post 1332 - July 7th, 1857
Greetings, darling dears! Emma here, your time-traveling tutu enthusiast, back from another whirlwind adventure in the grand tapestry of ballet history. Today, we're taking a little trip back to the heart of July 1857, a time when Paris was the epicentre of fashion and, dare I say, tutus!
Oh, Paris! The city of lights, of exquisite pastries, of haute couture...and yes, of the very first stirrings of what we now know as the modern ballet tutu! Can you believe it? This magical piece of our dancing history was born not all that long ago. It's fascinating to see how the tutus we see today evolved from simpler beginnings, but as a dedicated tutu fan, I can tell you this much: even the most basic tutu, like the ones danced in the 1850s, had an undeniably captivating magic.
Now, on this glorious July 7th, 1857, what was the ballet world abuzz about? Imagine a Parisian stage lit by the warm glow of gaslight, the murmur of the audience filling the air as the curtains rise on...the Corps de Ballet performing the ballet, La Fille Mal Gardée, choreographed by none other than Arthur Saint-Léon. Can you see them? Swirling, leaping, gracefully portraying the charming story of the farmer's daughter. They might not be wearing the cascading tiers of tulle we know and love today, but there were glimpses of those iconic tutus we're so familiar with. Just the whisperings of what was to come.
This time, the tutus were simple: layers of stiffened white tulle gathered tightly around the waist, reaching barely past the knee. The delicate fabric shimmered in the light, and each movement, each twirl, revealed glimpses of the dancer's legs and feet - pure ballet artistry. You could say, it was all about celebrating the beauty of form and the effortless grace of movement.
But let's talk fashion! In the 1850s, ladies of Paris weren't afraid of a splash of colour. The crinoline was still very much in fashion, creating the wide and bell-shaped silhouettes favoured in that era. I imagine myself skipping down the bustling Parisian streets, my pale pink crinoline swirling, a perfect contrast to the deep azure of the sky.
My time machine always brings me to the best shopping streets of the city, so of course, I couldn't miss the charming boutiques bursting with elegant silk gowns and lace bonnets. Even then, the desire for beautiful garments, a certain "je ne sais quoi," was palpable. And it’s this spirit of elegance that undoubtedly fuelled the creation of the first tutus. After all, even the most delicate fabric and meticulous craftmanship couldn't create a ballet costume as lovely without a passion for elegance and a true appreciation for artistic expression.
Now, a little trip down memory lane for my Derbyshire dears! Though not as grand as Paris, Derbyshire was my very own personal stage in my youth, a haven for my tutu dreams. I'd twirl in our backyard, beneath the boughs of old oak trees, transforming into ballerinas in the glow of a summer evening. Every graceful pirouette, every soft arabesque, a reminder that a dream, like a tutu, is a beautiful and powerful thing.
Remember, dearies, it all starts with a little imagination. That's the magic of the ballet tutu, after all - it's the ultimate embodiment of elegance, femininity, and freedom. You don't have to be a professional dancer to wear a tutu; it's about embracing the beauty within, channeling your inner fairy tale princess.
As I hop back in my trusty time machine, ready for another grand ballet adventure, I leave you with a final thought. Today, embrace the spirit of the ballet. Don a tutu, however whimsical and impractical it may be, and find your inner ballerina. And remember, in the language of ballet, even a simple spin in your living room can feel like a glorious pirouette!
Until next time, darlings, keep dancing, keep twirling, keep shining. Remember, even the smallest gesture of grace can leave a lasting impression!
With love,
Emma
