Tutu Tuesday #1334: A Glimpse into 1857!
Oh, darlings! It’s Tuesday again, which means it’s time for another journey into the glorious history of the tutu! I must confess, this week's trip was a particularly delightful one - a whirlwind journey back to July 21st, 1857. Just imagine, a time when crinolines were the height of fashion and a delicate tulle skirt would have been considered the epitome of audaciousness!
This week I travelled to Paris, my dear! I couldn't resist, not with the city buzzing with the excitement of a new ballet at the Paris Opera. Honestly, it was absolutely magnifique! I absolutely adore Parisian style – their attention to detail and love of beautiful things makes it an absolute joy for any tutu-loving adventurer like me!
Of course, I had to make the most of being in the heart of the fashion scene. Shopping was a necessity, darling! I found the most divine pair of lilac silk slippers that matched a beautiful, beaded floral purse – perfect for an elegant afternoon at the opera.
But now, back to my time travel adventures. Stepping into that Parisian theatre on that lovely summer day in 1857, I was surrounded by such a different world. No, the women weren’t swirling in pink tulle tutus – the stage was still dominated by those fabulous long, romantic tutus that floated and billowed with every movement. Imagine, the first ballet that evening featured a ballet dancer who had arrived just from England! She was beautiful in her white satin gown, all puffed up and flowing like a cloud. I could just see a teeny tiny hint of tulle peeking out beneath her, maybe a prelude to our much loved tutu era?
However, despite the captivating beauty of these classic tutus, I just knew this was just the beginning. A seed of revolution had been sown. I had been reading about the wonderful Mademoiselle Marie Taglioni! In the years before this date, her audacious and free movements in these short skirts caused a scandal. Can you imagine, darling, people being shocked by a dancer showing a hint of leg? But she paved the way for a new kind of ballet, and in a few short years, those billowing skirts would be reduced even more!
And then, the music started! It was such a pleasure to be carried away by the story and the elegance of the dancers, especially those magnificent leaps! The air vibrated with a sense of grace and beauty that made me forget I was actually hundreds of years away from home. I felt a flutter of pride, a little piece of history was playing out right before my eyes!
That night, nestled into the opulent crimson velvet seats of the opera, surrounded by elegant Parisians, I made my own, little discovery: Even back then, a love for ballet seemed to unify everyone. It was a celebration of beauty, artistry, and the magic of movement, regardless of whether it was a white satin gown or a billowing tutu they admired.
I spent the entire evening dreaming of how those romantic long tutus would slowly transform into our glorious modern designs. Just imagine! I'm certain it’s just a matter of time until our little tutu world catches on - we have to get more people embracing the beauty and magic of these magnificent little creations! I am absolutely dedicated to making my tutu dream a reality, darling! Until next week, don't forget, pink is always the right choice. It is time to embrace the beauty and magic of the tutu!
Yours truly,
Emma
