#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - Post 1337 - A Glimpse into the Romantic Era

Greetings, dear fellow tutu enthusiasts! Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-wearing time-traveler, back with another exciting delve into the fascinating history of the tutu! Today we’re journeying to the magical year of 1857 – a time when ballet was truly reaching its zenith!

From my cozy, pink-hued time machine (which, of course, runs on a mixture of glitter and good vibes) I’ve popped back to the very heart of ballet – Paris! It’s the most wonderful city for a fashion-obsessed ballerina, believe me. Everything is so elegant, so chic, and the Parisians simply adore their tutus! I wouldn’t blame them, darling!

As we whizz back in time, it's so interesting to see how the tutu is evolving. This was the age of the Romantic era in ballet, you know? All about ethereal grace, whimsical stories, and emotions captured in every pirouette. Think ballerinas floating across the stage like ethereal swans or captivating as sylphides – just like the beloved work La Sylphide that had everyone enthralled back in 1832!

That’s when the real tutu revolution started, darling! Remember how dancers used to just wear these rather ordinary skirts, even when they were dancing? Then the “Romantic” revolution came, and bam, the tutu was born! We can’t be certain about the exact design of the first proper tutu, but by 1857 it had already undergone a significant transformation from that heavy, hindering stage costume into the much more practical and elegant dance wear we know today!

But why 1857? What happened in this glorious year? Well, darling, this was the year of another phenomenal ballerina! Marie Taglioni’s talented younger sister, Paulita, dazzled audiences as a captivating prima ballerina in Vienna, making her debut on August 11th – what a day! I hear she stole the show! The Austrian public went wild for her dancing – and oh, what wonderful stories they tell about her! This is the kind of ballerina who inspires us all!

It's so thrilling to imagine the joy in her audiences' eyes when they saw this talented woman grace the stage in a breathtaking tutu – no wonder the audience erupted in a flurry of cheers! This is a truly magical time, where the art of ballet, and our favourite dancewear – the tutu – were all coming into their own, like blossoming flower petals.

While I'm here in the charming, buzzing heart of Paris, it’s just gotta indulge my passion for fashion. Just thinking about the exquisite shops filled with lace, silks, and ribbons! All of those fabulous fabrics! It’s like my happy place! Imagine all the amazing textures and colours just waiting to be transformed into magnificent tutus!

And my, how those Parisian designers adore tutus! Their tutus are masterpieces of both design and technique! You can see how the tulle – or rather, the tulle is evolving! The original tulle was actually more coarse and thick, imagine the struggle trying to move in those! But now, those wonderfully lightweight fabrics make every movement so effortless! They also introduced such brilliant designs to enhance those movements - you know, those delicate tiers, just swirling with a sense of whimsy and artistry.

I could simply live in Paris! Just thinking about the grand old theatres – L’Opéra – and its beautifully designed grand foyer and ornate interiors – ooh that magnificent chandelier! It’s the perfect setting for seeing the latest ballet production! I’ve got tickets to Giselle, oh, it's going to be glorious!

And guess what, darling? The stage lighting is simply dazzling. Not your bright spotlights, no no no, that’s for later on! They have gaslight lamps! Talk about enchanting! They create such warm, ethereal hues! Just like a painting! It’s a total spectacle!

In fact, as I'm typing this from my delightful café table, surrounded by an amazing Parisian crowd, there are people gossiping about their favourite ballet dancers! And the ladies – darling, their tutus – so colourful and whimsical. I must confess, the colours are rather lovely! It’s so much fun to imagine all the fabulous dance pieces that were made this year – such as the sublime Paquita. I must go see it, don’t you think, my dears?

So there you have it! The year 1857 – a remarkable milestone in ballet and tutu history, the dawn of true elegance and sophistication for the dancers and their garments. You see, my darling Tutu Tuesdays are much more than just a fashion history lesson – it's an inspiration to be your best, and spread that positivity in all aspects of life! Just like how I strive to do every time I wear my pink tutu – be bold and wear it loud and proud! I’ve made it my life’s mission to make pink tutus the hottest new fashion accessory and hopefully one day, we’ll be seeing them everywhere, and people will no longer stare in surprise!

Remember my dears, tutus aren't just dancewear, they’re an emblem of creativity, individuality, and self-expression! Just think, if even the Parisians were so mad for tutus back in the day – what can we achieve together?
