#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Time - Ballet Tutu History 1857-10-20

Post Number 1347

Hello darlings! Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-wearing time traveller and all-around ballet enthusiast. Today, we're going on a little jaunt to the enchanting world of the 1850s - think gaslights, petticoats, and of course, ballet! It's a time when ballerinas were just beginning to shed their voluminous romantic skirts and experiment with something a little more... dare I say it... slinky!

Now, picture this: London, the very hub of fashion and artistry. A hush falls as the theatre lights dim, the orchestra strikes up, and on stage, a graceful figure in white steps onto the pointe shoes. It's the Marie Taglioni - a ballerina so iconic she's known simply as "the Goddess of the Dance."

But hold on, you're saying, white?! Pink you say? Well, yes, eventually darlings, pink tutus were all the rage. However, this era, it was white, white, white! Taglioni revolutionised the look with the tutu. Not that fussy, tiered Victorian number, no. This was a single layer, billowing cloud of muslin, perfectly highlighting her effortless movements and showing off those graceful legs. And oh my, were those moves exciting! Pirouettes, grand jetés, and fouettés all performed with such fluidity.

As a time traveller, you can imagine, I love going back to this time to see these magnificent performers! Imagine watching the choreography unfold - so graceful and dramatic. Ballet was the talk of the town! We’re talking royalty and aristocracy flocking to see Taglioni in La Sylphide - a spectacle where she, a young maiden, dances around her lover with, well, unreal skill and beauty. You’ve probably guessed it - she even wore white, feathered wings!

This period wasn't just about ballerinas though, you know! They were also pioneers in their use of makeup, hairstyles, and…lace! Can you believe it, lace on tutus? How très chic! It's definitely a look we should bring back. Imagine it - pink lace with delicate floral embroidery against soft pink silk. Perfection.

I can't say enough about how captivating those earlier forms of ballet were. It really was a spectacle of romance and femininity. Think beautiful flowing garments swirling like a fairytale, imagine delicate pointe shoes barely touching the stage - it was the ultimate in graceful elegance, wasn't it?

Of course, those times are gone - but the spirit of the tutu, it lives on. We've all grown up watching ballerinas spin in that signature garment - a symbol of creativity and artistry. Today, every single one of you can embrace that spirit. Think of it - a little bit of whimsy, a touch of drama, and a whole lot of fun wrapped up in a simple garment!

And what a coincidence, it's 20th October 1857! Did you know this is when the beloved Royal Ballet School was founded? In my home town of Derbyshire! Talk about serendipitous. So go forth, lovely ladies! Embrace the magic, the wonder, the sheer JOY of the tutu. This Tuesday, put on your own little pink delight, get into the spirit, and let the enchantment of ballet fill your day!

And don’t forget to catch my next #TutuTuesday blog post!

Lots of love,

Emma xxx
