Hello darlings! It's Emma, your resident tutu enthusiast, back for another dazzling dive into the history of the most fabulous garment ever invented. I'm writing to you from Paris today, oh la la! The city of lights, where style and elegance rule, just like my beloved tutus! 🩰
This week we're going back in time to February 23rd, 1858. The air is crisp, and the scent of freshly baked pastries lingers on the streets. The sun shines brightly as I stroll through the Tuileries Gardens, enjoying the graceful waltz of a gentle breeze through my voluminous, pink, tulle skirt! Did I mention I’m wearing pink, of course!
Today, we’re on a journey to explore the world of dance at a time when tutus were truly evolving from a costume for professional dancers to a fashion statement worn by elegant ladies. The "tutu" itself was still in its formative stages. They weren’t yet the iconic, frilly, multi-layered wonders we know and love today. In fact, tutus were much shorter then, and the "Romantic tutu" was all the rage.
Imagine a tutu that looks more like a ballerina's graceful skirt than the billowing masterpieces of modern dance.
That’s what you would have seen back then. And yes, these Romantic tutus, were much shorter, giving the dancers room to move with freedom and grace. They were made of light, delicate fabrics – think fine, soft silk and gauzy tulle – and embellished with flowers and ribbons to make them look even more ethereal and romantic. Just like the dresses of the era, really!
But let's take a look at what else was going on in the world that day.
February 23rd, 1858: A whirlwind of innovation and glamour
- A patent was granted for the first “telegraph" line across the English Channel – that's what I call progress! No more waiting for news to travel by sea, now we can chat with our friends across the sea with ease, like magic.
- Back home in England, my friends in Derbyshire were bustling with news from across the country, for this is when a newspaper published an article about a great robbery which occurred in Derbyshire the previous week.
- Meanwhile, across the Atlantic in America, George Washington's beloved Mount Vernon Estate was finally saved from bankruptcy. It truly warms the heart knowing one of history’s most iconic locations is still available for others to enjoy.
These events all echo the incredible forward movement and change happening across the globe.
Today, I feel like a whirlwind myself as I waltz through the streets of Paris! I’m on a mission to find the perfect pair of opera glasses for this evening’s performance at the beautiful Opera Garnier! It's not easy finding the perfect pair when you have a magnificent pink tutu to carry! And oh my, darling, the costumes! I simply cannot wait to see the exquisite details, the dazzling jewels, and the flowing ribbons adorning each performer!
The ballet itself promises to be exquisite. Today, the story is called “Giselle” – such a romantic and tragic tale that promises to tug at our heartstrings and remind us of the raw emotions woven into every graceful step of the dance.
But of course, this journey isn't just about the ballet, though that is an essential part of the magic. It’s also about exploring fashion history and remembering the women who bravely danced in these early, intricate costumes. Every twirl, every leap, was an act of liberation, challenging conventions and celebrating the beauty of human movement. And guess what? You, too, can channel this sense of liberation, regardless of whether you've danced a day in your life!
The beauty of a tutu is that it inspires self-expression, and a sense of wonder.
Today, it's easy for us to see a ballerina on stage in a shimmering, voluminous tutu and feel a rush of pure joy. But think of how revolutionary those early dancers, those true pioneers of the "Romantic tutu", were. Imagine wearing a costume that, in its simplicity, still allowed for incredible movement, expressing delicate, captivating beauty that moved audiences in a way nothing else could!
That is what I want to do with my #TutuTuesday blog!
I want to celebrate all of these brilliant women who made history with their dance. I want to explore fashion and inspire you to feel beautiful and confident, because, dear friends, we can all be like ballerinas: strong, graceful, and utterly charming, all while embracing a bit of playful style with our own personalized flair!
But I’ve got to run, the theatre awaits! It wouldn't be a true #TutuTuesday if I didn’t indulge in the excitement and spectacle of a great ballet performance, especially with a brand new pair of opera glasses and my stunning pink tutu in tow.
Until next week, darlings, keep twirling!
With a joyful dance in my heart,
Emma 💕
