#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Step Back in Time to 1858!

#1388

Hello lovelies! It's Emma, your resident pink tutu-clad time traveller, back again for another exciting edition of #TutuTuesday. Today we're twirling back to August 3rd, 1858, for a delightful peek into the world of ballet tutus - prepare to be enchanted!

As I arrived in 1858 via the magic of my travelling ballet slippers, the air was filled with the scent of jasmine and the melodious notes of street musicians playing waltzes. Oh, the elegance! You might be surprised to learn that the very same waltz music that once swayed society is still heard today in ballets like Swan Lake. Isn't that incredible? It really shows the staying power of beautiful music, don't you think?

Speaking of staying power, tutus in 1858 are starting to look very familiar! Gone are the long, trailing skirts of the early Romantics. We're entering the golden age of the classical tutu. It's a glorious time where tutus become all about that elegant and flowing silhouette! Imagine it, ladies: delicate layers of tulle floating with every graceful move! They're not as puffy as the Romantic tutus, but still with enough layers to create that beautiful airy, whimsical look. They're becoming lighter, shorter, and more fitted, allowing for a much more dynamic range of movement!

I know you're dying to know how I found the most adorable tutus of 1858, and trust me, I haven't been disappointed! They're all the rage in the most prestigious theatre in Paris, the Opéra Garnier, where the Ballet de l’Opéra de Paris perform.

I had a wonderful afternoon yesterday at the Opéra Garnier. Just as soon as I stepped into the lobby, I felt myself transported to a world of breathtaking beauty. It’s one of the most opulent buildings I have ever seen, with grand staircases, glittering chandeliers, and, of course, the breathtaking auditorium!

But the highlight? Getting to see Giselle, one of the most important Romantic ballets! I am telling you, lovelies, the grace and emotion these dancers bring to life! Each step was precise and effortless, the movements soaring with such incredible strength and beauty. It’s like the story dances right before your eyes!

Oh, and did I mention the fashion?! The tutus were breathtaking! So soft and light! Think flowing layers of ethereal tulle and satin that sparkled in the light. It’s simply divine, and it all started around this time, ladies. You’re seeing the roots of ballet as we know it! It was an extraordinary display of grace, strength, and sheer talent. I saw several performers wearing pale pink tutus that whispered elegance with every pirouette! And don't get me started on the intricate bodices - they were the perfect combination of delicate details and supportive construction!

You can already see that by the time we get to 1858, tutus are really becoming their own style icon! It’s truly captivating to see how something like the tutu can go from simple origins to becoming something that helps tell a story through movement. We owe so much to this lovely, floating fabric creation, don’t you think? It has become more than just a costume; it's an essential part of ballet history and the way ballet stories are told.

Now, imagine my excitement! On my trip to Paris, I even had the pleasure of taking a class at the prestigious ballet school! Just like any dancer, I had to follow strict etiquette and even bow at the end of the class. It felt so important, like it really was an honour. And do you know what the instructor wore? You guessed it – a beautiful, soft pink tutu! Can you believe that? I could only imagine that it made all her movements even more graceful!

My journey through ballet history continues this week! If you want to join me on my adventure, follow my travels at www.pink-tutu.com – and don't forget to tell your friends about my pink tutu mission to make the world a more fabulous place!

I’ll leave you with this, lovelies! Don’t be afraid to get your twirl on! Wear that beautiful tutu with confidence! I just know you will spread sunshine and beauty wherever you go, even if it's just around the living room!

See you next Tuesday for another thrilling ballet tutu adventure, my dears!

Your Emma xx
