#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Post #1434 - A Whirlwind of 1859!
Hello my darling tutu enthusiasts! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood tutu-loving time traveller, bringing you another thrilling #TutuTuesday blast from the past. This week, we're whisking ourselves back to the 21st of June, 1859.
Now, picture this: the air is abuzz with anticipation as the sun peeks over the rooftops of Paris, the most beautiful city in the world. You see, darling, tutus were simply EVERYTHING back then - even more so than they are today!
Just imagine the gorgeous spectacle - the graceful swans at the Ballet de lâOpĂ©ra, their billowing tutus taking flight under the dazzling gaslights. This is the golden age of ballet, where tutus truly reigned supreme, creating a magical, ethereal spectacle.
And while we're on the topic of this glorious period in time, allow me to delve into a little historical titbit - what was going on in the world back on June 21st, 1859? Well, the big news was the unveiling of a dazzling new carriage. This extravagant coach, bedecked with all the finery and elegance you can imagine, was commissioned by Napoleon III, Emperor of France, for his glamorous wife, Empress Eugenie. The perfect example of how grand, fabulous and exciting the world was in 1859 - just like tutus, they were practically synonymous with luxury and prestige!
But this day was about much more than carriages! For you see, darling, I found a lovely snippet in my time-travelling scrapbook - the Théùtre Impérial de l'Opéra was playing host to a stunning performance of the most popular ballet, "La Sylphide," set in Scotland, featuring ethereal, graceful ballerinas clad in white. Imagine those shimmering tulle tutus dancing under the crystal chandeliers, truly captivating the Parisian elite!
And here's something truly delightful â the tutu trend was beginning to spread, making its way beyond the grand opera house and into the hearts of fashionistas across Paris. Ladies were adding frills and flounces to their gowns, creating an air of whimsical elegance - much like my darling readers here! It was all about adding a touch of fairytale to everyday life.
Just like today, the tutus of 1859 were crafted from a magical fabric known as tulle, a mesh that was so delicately woven, so feather-light, so perfectly perfect for twirling and soaring through the air! And you can believe, these werenât just basic tutus - these were creations of lace and feathers and satin - quite the show-stoppers in those days!
As I mentioned, darling, the most beautiful thing about these 1859 tutus, was their pure elegance and romance, showcasing not only grace but also a woman's femininity. Oh, my, just imagining it all now â the tutus twirling under the chandeliers of the opera house! And it was this romantic charm that resonated so much with those fashionable ladies back in the day - who could resist adding a touch of ballerina elegance to their lives, don't you agree, my dears?
In 1859, just like today, wearing a tutu was about celebrating the feminine and feeling confident in your own skin. Think of all the grand ballrooms and garden parties back then, every lady wearing her most stunning creation, all shimmering and floating in a world of silk and tulle. The most stunning, elegant, captivating outfits, don't you think?
Just like you lovely ladies today, these 19th-century trendsetters adored fashion and expressing their own individual flair through clothes. Imagine a Parisian lady with a dash of Parisian chic, walking down a grand boulevards in her soft, pink tutu, adorned with the most beautiful lace - what an exquisite image, isnât it? A delicate swirl of tulle in a world where women began to find their voices in society. What a glorious time it must have been, donât you agree?
Of course, I mustnât forget my Tutu Travels! Now, my lovely readers know I adore train travel, a splendidly elegant way to see the world. Well, in 1859, railways were booming. Think of the journey through Derbyshire, where I come from - the wind in my hair, a cup of tea in hand, and of course, a lovely pink tutu. The perfect way to embrace that quintessential English charm. I imagine a glamorous railway station in London bustling with well-dressed ladies boarding elegant carriages heading out for a grand weekend trip to the countryside, perhaps a jaunt to Epsom, maybe even a thrilling weekend of race-watching!
The fashion of that time, darling, embraced the same timeless elegance and romantic charm as the beautiful, billowing tutus. Think of lace gloves, intricate hats, exquisite gloves, and those stunning bustles to give those long skirts that lovely dramatic swoosh. Such exquisite detail! And remember, just as with tutus today, these dresses were for every lady, young and old.
I truly love being able to explore history, bringing you a glimpse into how these captivating garments brought magic and wonder to the world back then. After all, tutus aren't just a simple piece of fabric; they embody a spirit of feminine joy, a testament to a century of glamour and dance, just like you, dear readers, embody today. We might be a hundred and sixty-plus years apart, but when you don that pink tutu, darling, I can assure you, you'll be twirling right back to that 19th century spirit. Itâs a timeless feeling that simply transcends time, much like the enduring power of a ballet performance!
But, until next Tuesday, darling, Iâll be off on another whirlwind adventure through time! And I shall be looking out for more fabulous tutu trends as I travel back through time. Now, if youâll excuse me, I have a performance to attend tonight! And yes, you guessed it - a very special performance of âLa Sylphideâ!
With lots of love and a swirl of my tutu,
Emma xxx
