#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1859-10-11

Dearest readers, and welcome to another delightful installment of #TutuTuesday, where we explore the magical world of tutus! I am your fabulous, time-travelling friend Emma, back from a trip to the most fascinating place – Paris! It’s where ballet absolutely flourishes, darling, with so much grace and elegance swirling around the city, and all those enchanting shops for fashion-forward gals like myself.

Now, for our journey back in time – to 1859! Can you believe it? Just imagine: no phones, no cars, but oh! such fabulous clothes and dance performances. We're looking at a time when Paris, darling, was the hub for all things fashion, and believe me, the tutus were stunning. A quick flick through my Time Travelling Fashion Journal reminds me, oh yes! - it’s just around this time that Marie Taglioni’s famed and graceful "La Sylphide", a ballet in which she was adorned with a gossamer, barely-there costume, captured the hearts of audiences and sparked the era of the Romantic tutu, my favourites!

So let’s set the scene, shall we? The year is 1859 and I’ve hopped off the train at the Gare du Nord, practically floating on air. That divine sense of excitement for Parisian adventures? You bet! First things first, darling, shopping for a beautiful silk scarf to complete my travelling ensemble – it’s the epitome of chic. And of course, a pink-tinted feather boa! Who doesn’t need a touch of Parisian whimsy, right?

Once my outfit’s complete, darling, it's on to the OpĂ©ra! * The iconic, majestic architecture – what a sight! I love getting all dolled up and then observing the world passing by while waiting outside with other elegantly-dressed patrons. And oh, the *OpĂ©ra Garnier, a sight for sore eyes with its decadent interior, exquisite decorations, and just a dash of Victorian flamboyance, of course!

*Tonight's performance is the most beautiful story set in Italy, * Giselle, starring the incomparable Fanny Elssler, darling. Her performance was breathtaking. And, guess what, dear readers? It’s at this very moment, right around this date in 1859 that one of history's most-loved ballets, Giselle makes its very first public showing!

Oh, to be back in those days - the air filled with the intoxicating whispers of ‘oh la la’ and ‘ trùs chic!’, with whispers of delighted audience members praising every move of the dancers. Can't you picture it, darling?

This #TutuTuesday’s extra special because this period, darlings, was simply the golden age of tutus! From the airy elegance of Marie Taglioni’s gowns in “La Sylphide” to the layered tulle artistry in “Giselle”, these ballerinas were rocking what was considered radical, revolutionary dance fashion for the time and setting trends that we can still admire and love to this day. And don't forget, each movement, each gesture was elevated by these graceful, beautifully-designed tutus! These ballerinas literally *moved and captivated audiences like never before! *Isn’t it amazing? *

*And speaking of the tutus themselves, I can already see my next purchase * – A truly dreamy, soft-pink, silk-tulle confection with just a hint of a Victorian aesthetic! Oh, I can picture myself floating around my flat in that dress. I’d just need to add a lace-trimmed bustle and perhaps a silk fan to make it utterly divine. And to tie it all together – of course - a delicate bouquet of fresh roses - you know, just for the elegance factor, darling.

As I continue to dance through the corridors of time, I’m determined to unearth all the exciting moments from the history of tutus. You know I’ll always share my most wonderful fashion discoveries here with all of you – and make sure to keep an eye out for all the new blog posts – and the upcoming extra-special, * all-pink ballet-themed post coming next month, as we’ll be celebrating all things ballet history at *the world’s most famous theatre: * the Paris OpĂ©ra!** Isn’t it simply exquisite?

*Just remember, darling, life is short - live with a dash of tulle and an ample sprinkling of glitter. * Until next #TutuTuesday, wear your tutus proudly and enjoy the whirl of life, just as if you were on a Parisian stage.

Yours in dancing delight,

Emma
