#TutuTuesday: A Whirlwind of 1859! (Blog Post #1455)

Bonjour, darlings! Emma here, your favourite pink-tutu-clad time-travelling ballerina! It’s Tuesday, which means it’s time for another flutter of our Ballet Tutu History!

This week, I’m taking a grand leap back in time, all the way to the 15th of November, 1859. Just imagine, my dear readers, the gaslight twinkling in the Parisian streets, the cobblestones underfoot… it's quite a different world from our own, wouldn't you say?

Of course, even in those days, the romance of the ballet held sway. And guess what? We can pin the date of our journey straight into the heart of this glorious time.

But first, let's have a spot of afternoon tea! Have you brought your fanciest teacup, my dears? Mine's adorned with dancing ballerinas, wouldn't you know.

Ah, there's nothing quite like a good cuppa to settle the mind, is there? Now, let's whisk back to our time machine, shall we?

The Ballet's a Bustle

It's Paris, my lovelies, the beating heart of ballet, where even a stroll down the boulevard can feel like a waltzing vignette! This city has seen a flurry of ballet activity in the 19th century. Think Giselle, La Sylphide, and Swan Lake! Yes, our dear Tchaikovsky was just a young chap, composing his first waltzes, dreaming of the stage, no doubt.

But 1859 was a year of momentous shifts in the ballet world, just like the pirouette you execute with such grace! The Ballet Imperial, that glittering symbol of Russian ballet, was blossoming in St. Petersburg, boasting dazzling talents like the fabulous ballerina Carlotta Grisi. You'll want to brush up on this darling - she was the Queen of the Romantic Era. And if I have time to whip up my trusty time-travel tutu, I’ll be sure to visit her sometime for a proper cuppa, eh?

Now, to the actual date itself… 15th of November! What happened? I’m so glad you asked, my darlings, because I love sharing secrets and uncovering hidden gems of history!

The Big Event: A Glimpse of Glory

On this very day, a sparkling spectacle took place – the opening of the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, darling! Yes, it was a lavish occasion, brimming with grandeur and elegance. The Bolshoi was a symbol of Russia's blossoming art scene and a source of national pride. The theatre itself is a breathtaking structure, an embodiment of the Romanov era. Imagine ornate gilded interiors, crystal chandeliers shimmering, and plush velvet seats - truly a spectacle worthy of a queen.

Oh, darling! Just thinking about it makes me yearn for a trip to Moscow! Perhaps we'll journey there together someday. The Bolshoi is just begging for a dance!

But the real magic of the day, the reason I love it so much, my dear, is because, that very night, the inaugural performance saw the beautiful ballet The Little Humpbacked Horse gracing the stage. I know you can practically smell the perfume in the air, can't you? I bet they were a grand spectacle! This story, a fairytale with mystical creatures and enchanting dances, was an instant hit. Isn’t that exciting?

It was all such a thrill to be there, just think, they probably wore the most stunning gowns - a whole panoply of colors like rich velvety crimson, emerald, and of course, our favourite: pink. I think the ballet scene is getting more exciting than ever! Don’t you just love the sheer spectacle? I do!

Tutus Then and Now: Whimsical and Ever-Evolving

Speaking of spectacle, my dears, just a small flutter about the tutus! Of course, back in 1859, tutus were already in full swing! I dare say they were the heart and soul of ballet - elegant, feminine, and graceful. Picture them in soft pastels, dreamy and billowing – maybe even a dash of silk, or perhaps, my dears, you could even find some exquisite lace adorning their delicate layers.

But even then, you see, there was always a quest for new, inventive, and more elaborate designs. Some ballerinas even had tutus crafted with elaborate hand-stitched decorations - real miniature masterpieces, darling! A symphony of delicate details that would delight your eyes and your heart, I promise!

I know that we now have modern materials - they give tutus a lightness and grace. Think of all those twirls and jumps, I dare say these beautiful dancers from long ago would be blown away with the beauty of a modern-day tutus!

You know what I love about history? How every era seems to be an evolution of what came before, a bit like a grand ballet choreography where one graceful movement flows seamlessly into the next. And we get to be part of the current evolution, by joining the community that celebrates the grace of dance and all it brings to our world.

Travel by Train: Fashion & Entertainment

My dear readers, you know how much I love to travel - especially by train! It's truly the epitome of glamorous travel! You can settle into your seat with a book and sip a glass of sparkling water (though I admit a cup of tea makes the journey infinitely more enjoyable, wouldn’t you agree?). Or gaze out of the window, soaking in the fleeting landscapes. There's something almost theatrical about the whole experience.

In 1859, train travel was becoming ever more popular, taking travellers on journeys across Europe, weaving stories like a vibrant ballet across different cultures. Fancy traveling by rail with me someday?

I simply love finding treasures hidden within the past! You can learn so much about the way people lived, what they valued, and of course, what they wore, darling. And in this world of fashionable fun, I try to find a story behind every button, every stitch, and every piece of lace - for me, these are little tales that take me back in time and make me truly believe in the magic of fashion!

Pink is the Colour of the Season!

But enough of my time-travel shenanigans, darling! It's time to talk about the real reason you're here – Pink! My dearest, it is the colour of love, sweetness, and well, just a splash of pure delight, wouldn't you agree?

And that is why we are on this journey! To encourage you, my darlings, to embrace your inner pink-loving ballerina. You don't need a stage to twirl! The streets are our stage! Put on your pinkest dress, your brightest lipstick, and dance!

Why don’t you grab your little pink tulle skirt, maybe one of those lovely new frocks in a pale shade, darling. Throw on a fluffy white feather boa for an extra touch of boudoir magic. Or you could tie a pink ribbon on your wrist, or even adorn your hair with pink flowers – even just a pink-toned brooch will bring that special charm to your outfit. Let your hair down, spin in circles, and embrace that irresistible burst of pink! Don’t forget to give it a twirl – that's our motto!

So, darling, remember this as you sashay through your week – you don’t need to be a ballerina, a theatre-goer, or even a time traveller, you can be a ballet history enthusiast! Let’s all embrace the love of the beautiful and graceful! Because you know what they say: a little bit of pink can go a long way, wouldn’t you agree?

Until next time, darlings. Keep twirling and dreaming in pink! #TutuTuesday

Your pink-loving ballet ballerina,

Emma
