#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Post #1480 - The Romantic Era! 🩰💖

Hey my lovely Tutu-ettes!

It's Emma here, your resident pink tutu-wearing time-traveler, ready to whisk you away on another fabulous journey through ballet history! This week, we're taking a trip to the 1860s and exploring the Romantic era of ballet, a time when ballerinas were absolutely captivating the world with their graceful artistry and breathtaking techniques. I'm not going to lie, you know I'm loving this time period! There's just something so ethereal about the early Romantic Era tutus, with their soft layers and billowing silhouettes. Sigh, they make me feel like a graceful fairy!

Before we delve into the tutus themselves, let's set the scene, shall we? It's a glorious May day, and the air is filled with the sweet scent of spring flowers, just like back in Derbyshire where I'm from. Can't you just imagine? The sun is streaming down on the grand theaters, casting a golden light on the dazzling performance taking place within. I have a feeling today would have been quite a bustling day at the opera! I'm sure some glamorous women were rushing to pick out their most elaborate gowns and sparkling jewellery, ready to take their seats and be captivated by the dancers. And we know the Romantic period was about passion, expression, and ethereal beauty.

Speaking of which, can you imagine having witnessed the performance of the celebrated Italian dancer, Fanny Elssler, today? She's the Queen of Romantic Era ballet! Known for her incredible technique and dramatic expressions, Elssler was truly a force to be reckoned with. I bet the crowd would have been mesmerised by her dramatic and emotive interpretations of dance. Fanny was famed for her passionate style of dancing - she really knew how to draw an audience into the heart of her performance. And who knows? I just might run into her myself!

Now, onto the main attraction, those tutus! The Romantic Era tutu was quite a revolution from earlier styles, marking a significant shift toward lighter, airier, and more fluid movements for the dancers. It's truly the precursor to the modern tutus we see today!

The first thing to know is that the Romantic Era tutus are famous for their tiers of tulle. Remember tulle, those delicate and airy mesh fabric, the very thing that gives the tutus their floaty quality? The Romantic Era tutus embraced multiple layers of tulle, often ending with a flourish of flounces and frills. This created that breathtaking “whimsical fairy” image of ballerinas that had the audience enthralled.

And those colours! You just can't talk about Romantic Era tutus without mentioning those vibrant hues! Imagine shimmering white, blushing pink, delicate pastel shades, or perhaps a dazzling sky blue… Those colours perfectly complement the lightness and flow of the tutus, highlighting the dancer's movements with such captivating elegance!

Don't forget that this is the period where the tutus grew significantly longer! Now, imagine an ankle-grazing tutu that swept across the stage, offering breathtaking glimpses of a dancer’s slender limbs and graceful gestures. Those long tutus would have truly given the dancers freedom to move effortlessly through their performances, adding to their captivating dance! What do you think about it all, dear Tutu-ettes?

So, I have a question for you, my fabulous followers: What are some of your favourite details about the Romantic Era tutus? Let me know in the comments below!

I simply love travelling back in time to the Romantic era, watching those expressive dancers grace the stage with their beautiful movements. The soft tutus, the gorgeous colours, the emotions - there's something so magical and mesmerising about this period in dance history!

And don’t forget, we’re only just beginning our journey into the enchanting world of tutus. Next Tuesday, we're embarking on a new adventure - a different time, a different style!

But for now, go forth and spread the love of tutus!

Keep it pink,

Emma 🩰💖

P.S. Oh, I forgot to tell you all about this fabulous day! It's May 8th in the Romantic era and it's not only International Ballerina Day, but the legendary composer Johann Strauss Sr. is also celebrating his 25th birthday! He was a celebrated conductor and composer known for his vibrant, passionate waltzes and his musical collaborations with waltzing ballet.
