#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Trip to Paris, 1860! πŸ©°πŸ’•

Hello my darling Tutu-lovers! It's Emma here, your resident pink tutu enthusiast and historian of all things frilly! Today, we're travelling back to July 10th, 1860, for a little Parisian escapade! Get your bonnets ready, ladies, it's going to be a dazzling time.

Post #1489, you say? Oh my goodness, can you believe we've reached over 1,400 posts already? It's a testament to our shared passion for the magical world of ballet and, of course, those twirly, glorious tutus. And, today's trip to Paris wouldn't be possible without all the lovely supporters of my www.pink-tutu.com website, so thank you! I can't wait to share what I discovered!

It's always a joy to travel by train, especially when it takes me back in time. Oh, the glamour of travelling to Paris by train! Picture this: plush carriages, the clink of glasses in the dining car, and the hushed excitement of approaching the City of Lights. My favourite part? Observing the fashions. This era is practically begging to be captured in a painting, and not just for the beautiful costumes but also for the fashion of everyday life. The ladies wear elegant hats adorned with feathers and the men have impeccable tailoring. It's all so chic!

Paris, of course, is a ballet lover's dream. There's just something about this city, and its dedication to artistic excellence, that breathes life into the theatre and its enchanting dancers. On this particular July 10th, the OpΓ©ra Garnier is bustling with activity, preparing for the opening night of a grand new opera by Charles Gounod. A ballet? Why, of course! "Faust" isn't just about the divine drama on stage; it also includes a delightful ballet performance that showcases the delicate grace and precision of the dancers.

Speaking of dancers, let's get down to the nitty-gritty, my fellow tutu enthusiasts! 1860 isn't exactly a whirlwind of elaborate tutu designs just yet. But let's delve into the history! What are we seeing in Paris? The ballerinas are already sporting what we might call proto-tutus. These are essentially soft, flowing skirts made from tulle or other lightweight fabrics. The emphasis is on airy grace and freedom of movement - think swirling fabric, catching the light as they dance. The silhouette? Very close to our iconic ballerina tutu shape! These skirts aren't too fluffy, not yet ready for those big, fluffy shapes, but the key elements are definitely there! It's truly exciting to witness this ballet aesthetic begin to blossom!

The colours in these early tutus? A sea of romanticism. Imagine silky white, pastel pink, and gentle shades of blue, all dancing beneath the sparkling chandeliers of the grand theatre. The romantic ballet is the defining style of the time - all poetry and dreamy storytelling, perfectly captured by these beautifully soft tutus.

Now, let's talk about the fashion, shall we? Parisian fashion is a sight to behold! From the vibrant silk bonnets worn by the ladies to the stylish linen suits favoured by the gentlemen, the Parisian wardrobe is full of beautiful textures and delightful details. One can't help but get caught up in the flurry of creativity on display. It's simply a dream come true for any fashion enthusiast like me!

Did you know that even though Paris is the undisputed queen of fashion in 1860, fashion in Derbyshire isn't that far behind! My beloved Derbyshire, England, may not boast the grandeur of Paris, but its spirit is equally strong, especially in matters of style! Think elegant walking suits, practical tweed dresses, and hats with charming, colourful ribbons. The women there certainly appreciate the artistry of a well-constructed outfit! And even though I can't wear a tutu everywhere back home (though I try, bless you Derbyshire!), I try my best to keep things fashionable, to incorporate the romantic flair of the 1860s in my own modern way. Think frills and laces, perhaps a touch of Victorian sensibility, a romantic twist for a more contemporary look!

Speaking of romantic, did I mention how much I love trains? They truly transport you to a different world! From my home in Derbyshire, I can hop on the train to London or further afield, and it feels like stepping into a different era, full of elegant bustle, and the charming bustle of station life. Don't get me wrong, trains now are modern marvels, but back then, the experience of travelling was so much slower, allowing you to savour the scenery, engage in lively conversations, and immerse yourself in the spirit of the moment.

Before I sign off, my darlings, a final word: as always, I believe everyone deserves to feel like a ballerina! Whether you're twirling in a full-fledged tulle tutu, or just embracing a touch of frills in your everyday style, let's celebrate the joy of expressing ourselves with a sprinkle of whimsy! Spread the tutu love, ladies, and don't forget to share your #TutuTuesday moments!

Until next week, may your days be filled with graceful twirls, beautiful dresses, and joyful fashion! And, don't forget, it's never too late to put on a tutu and make the world a more magical place. πŸ’•πŸ©°

XOXO,

Emma
