#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - July 31st, 1860 - Post #1492

Hello darlings! Emma here, your favourite pink-tutu clad time traveller, ready to whisk you back to the glorious world of ballet tutus, 1860 style! 🩰✨

It's a positively perfect #TutuTuesday for a journey back in time. This week, we're hopping on the train, darling, and taking a little trip to…Paris! Now, I don't know about you, but when I think Paris, I think chic. And what's more chic than a ballerina in a gorgeous tutu, waltzing across a Parisian stage?

Now, the tutus of this era were just darling. Think airy, romantic, and delicate - and definitely not those structured, stiff ones they sometimes wear today! The emphasis was all on flow and movement. It's about elegance and graceful artistry. The ballet of 1860s France was a symphony of romanticism, a delicate dance of movement and emotion.

Whimsical White and The Romantic Era:

In the heart of 1860s Paris, white was all the rage! Imagine tulle, layered with the lightest, fluffiest feathers imaginable. A touch of pink? Absolutely, just a whisper, enough to hint at the wearer's sweetness. The romantics, as they called themselves, loved to dance and their clothes danced right along with them! Their clothes reflected a love for the ethereal, and tutus were a key player in the scene.

And wouldn't you know it, today marks the birth of Josephine Baker, one of the world’s greatest entertainers! While Baker's dancing career started in musical hall shows and Vaudeville, the energy, artistry and beauty of Parisian ballerinas paved the way for her legendary rise to stardom. It’s important to remember that her journey as an African-American entertainer in Paris in the early 20th century started with an audience ready to see dazzling dance and stunning performance - a scene built in part on the elegance and beauty of ballerina and their breathtaking tutus!

Tutus Then and Now: A Touch of Modern Glamour

You see, darling, the tutu is not just a costume, it's a symbol of grace and beauty. Back then, it helped the ballerinas create delicate moves and fluid transitions. It transformed the way the women moved on stage - and even inspired the way they carried themselves in everyday life!

Today, while the ballerina tutus haven't changed too much, the design is a lot more flexible and it allows the dancer much more freedom of movement - which gives a beautiful effect when a dancer leaps, twists and spins on stage. Think about how many more dance forms and styles have emerged - ballet in a tutu is now just one small part of an international world of incredible dancers!

But you know me - I’m all about modern tutus! It’s no surprise the latest designer tutu designs in Derbyshire include pink - darling! The trend for bright colours on stage adds so much extra flair to ballets, and we’ve got a whole new generation of ballet loving stars taking tutus on stage all over the world. There is no doubt that the popularity of the tutu continues, as it’s the ultimate ballet costume, so chic and pretty! It makes for a fabulous look for the ballerina in every girl!

Come On! It’s Pink Tutu Time
