#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Glimpse into 1861!
Hello, my dearest tutu-loving darlings! Welcome back to another edition of my #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History blog! I'm your resident time-travelling ballerina, Emma, and today, we're stepping back in time to the year 1861, and oh my, what a year it was for the world of fashion!
But before we delve into the captivating history of the tutu, let me tell you a little about my latest adventures. This week, I found myself in the heart of Paris, the city of lights, the capital of fashion! I must admit, Paris never disappoints. The energy, the style, the stunning architecture - everything about this place makes my ballerina heart sing! And wouldn't you know it, I stumbled upon the most beautiful antique shop brimming with lace and ribbons, the perfect ingredients for a stunningly dreamy tutu. You'll have to wait for the photos, darlings, I'll share them all on my Instagram soon! Speaking of photos, you know I have to document all my journeys in my vintage pink photo album!
And now, onto our #TutuTuesday history. Today's date, October 15th, 1861, marked a rather important event for those who loved ballet. A young ballerina named Fanny Elssler, who is renowned as the world's first real dance star (and the inspiration for my pink tutu dreams), made her comeback after years away. The dance world was captivated by her performance, and her presence had such an impact on the ballet scene. I would have given anything to see this! She really was the most incredible ballerina - so much grace, energy, and style. You wouldn't catch her dancing in anything but the most dazzling tutu.
And talking about tutus, I can't believe it's been so long since I told you about the history of the tutu itself! It was in the early 19th century, specifically around 1830, that this delightful piece of dancewear began its journey. It all started with a ballerina named Marie Taglioni, whose innovative dancing demanded lighter clothing. She started with shorter skirts and eventually, the beautiful tutu came to be. And with it, a new era of elegance, expression, and beauty on stage was born!
Now, while we often associate tutus with these famous ballerinas, let's remember the evolution of this remarkable piece of clothing.
Imagine this, darlings! Before the tutus, ballerinas wore gowns - think beautiful silks, swirling satin, a real sight for sore eyes. But let's be honest, you need a bit of air to spin and pirouette gracefully! I must admit, wearing such grand outfits, though stunning, must have been a nightmare to dance in! It wouldn't surprise me if a few lost their footing at some point!
Then came the innovation of shorter, less restrictive skirts, often with layers and a shorter, more revealing bodice. But imagine trying to perform a grand jeté in layers of petticoats and crinoline! You would be quite the spectacle, I tell you!
And here's where the tutu really shines. Think flowing, delicate fabric. The soft tulle is light as a feather, perfect for showcasing the ballerina's grace and precision, and allowing the freedom to express each pirouette, each grand jeté. And the evolution continues with new types of tutus coming to be - the "Romantic tutu" was a lovely vision in layered tulle and delicate lace - think sheer elegance. You can't go wrong with a good "Romantic tutu"! And then there's the "Classical tutu", the shorter tutu that we often see today - perfect for showcasing all those impressive techniques!
Now, don't think for a minute that the tutu's history has stayed still, because it's been evolving constantly!
With the rise of contemporary ballet, we started seeing more creative tutus that pushed the boundaries, and oh my, it's a true testament to the beauty of imagination! Think deconstructed, edgy tutus. Think asymmetrical layers and colour-blocking that creates a unique, stunning silhouette! I've seen some wonderful tutu designs in my travels, believe me!
It's worth remembering, though, that there's more to the story of tutus than just dancing. These intricate works of art are a vital part of theatre performance. And you know what they say? Every piece tells a story, and tutus are no exception!
Don't forget, darlings, our #TutuTuesday journey is only beginning! Each week, I'll bring you new and exciting stories of how the ballet tutu has captured the imagination and heart of the world. But you know what, let's go beyond the stage! It's time to make the tutu the most fashionable accessory for every woman. I have big plans for all of you - join me, put on your best pink tutu, and let's spread the beauty and magic of the tutu with the world. After all, with the right attitude, anything is possible!
