Tutu Tuesday: A Glimpse into the Past! (Post #1586)

Hello darlings! Emma here, your favourite pink-tutu clad time traveller, ready to whisk you away on a journey through the history of the ballet tutu! 🩰 Today, we're setting our time machine for 20th May 1862 - get ready to be swept back to a world of waltzes, wonder and oh-so-stylish gowns!

Paris, Mon Chérie

The City of Lights is buzzing! Paris is a veritable mecca for everything glamorous and elegant. From the elegant boulevards to the grand opera houses, there’s an intoxicating air of excitement everywhere you go.

Today, we're going to explore the magical world of ballet. Imagine swirling skirts and delicate steps as dancers enchant audiences with tales of love, magic and bravery. You know what I find truly wonderful? Even back then, the tutu was already taking centre stage!

Tutus - Then and Now

While it wasn’t the pink fluffy dream of our modern tutus just yet, those early ballerina costumes were certainly catching the eye! Back in 1862, the "tutu" we know today didn't even exist yet. Instead, dancers donned elaborate, romantic, knee-length, billowing skirts made of multiple layers of tulle. These stunning creations helped give birth to the classical ballerina we know today – graceful and delicate, like a dream.

Think layers upon layers of soft tulle, intricately decorated with lace, ribbons, and sequins, often mimicking the swirling and voluminous shapes of flower petals, birds in flight, or ethereal clouds. It truly must have been a spectacular sight!

What can we learn from this period for today? Oh my dear, so much!

  • Experiment with Volume: We can take a page from these early tutus and inject some exciting volume into our own modern styles. Think flowing fabrics, layers, and voluminous sleeves to achieve a graceful, elegant silhouette. It’s all about playing with textures and silhouettes!

  • Embrace Details: The intricate lace and embellishments on those historic tutus are truly stunning! Let’s get inspired to add details and a bit of glitz to our everyday wardrobes!

  • Don't be afraid to play with color: Back in the 1860s, fashion favoured a palette of soft pastels and rich jewel tones – there was no such thing as being too fancy! Today, this allows us to be daring, to experiment with bright and vibrant hues.

And remember, as always, there’s a pink tutu for every occasion! 💖

A Day Out in Paris:

Speaking of Paris, it's just a short train ride away. Now, this is the kind of day I was born for: hopping aboard a carriage and gliding through picturesque landscapes, enjoying the gentle sway and fresh air! We could visit the Tuileries Garden for a romantic stroll, maybe grab some macarons and tea in a chic café... But today, I'm heading straight to the grand Palais Garnier – the stunning opera house, and the heart of the Parisian ballet scene. I simply adore watching the world's greatest dancers in action, those amazing stories unfolding in the elegant halls!

This day in history, the magnificent Palais Garnier is in full swing with the captivating story of "Faust" by Charles Gounod! The performance will transport you to a realm of captivating music and mesmerising choreography. I'm ready to lose myself in the world of ballet!

I'll be back next week with more thrilling #TutuTuesday discoveries - stay tuned!

With a twirl and a smile,

Emma 🩰
