#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Post 1588

Bonjour, darlings! Emma here, back from another whirlwind tour through the history of the tutu, and guess what? We're stepping into a most glamorous era today: June 3rd, 1862.

Imagine a London carriage pulled by a sleek bay horse, the wheels clicking rhythmically on cobblestones, taking you to the majestic theatre where the glittering ballet world awaits. Yes, ladies, we're about to travel to a time when ballerinas twirled in their elegant tutus and brought elegance to life on the stage.

Today's Tutu Tuesday is special for a very particular reason – the "Pink Perfection" era is about to hit the scene! Well, not literally pink, but close enough for a girl who loves her tutus as much as I do! Think about the colour that would best evoke a dream, something soft and gentle yet bright and cheerful, with an air of whimsical elegance – pastel blue! The tutus, though, are not just a wash of delicate hues, no, they are evolving towards a new kind of graceful grandeur, a vision that is both charmingly dainty and gloriously grand.

Our ballet goddesses are about to be seen wearing a bell-shaped, single-layered, fitted tulle skirt, much lighter and shorter than the grand, heavy multi-layered tutus of the past. And I tell you, darlings, it is the epitome of chic! It lets their movement take flight with such delicate grace, allowing their elegant leaps and captivating pirouettes to be seen in all their beauty!

And oh, the ballet scene of 1862! It’s bustling with new life. Paris, London, and St. Petersburg, oh darling, these cities are just bubbling with balletic wonder. The theatre halls echo with the applause of excited audiences mesmerized by graceful moves and captivating stories spun by the ballerinas. The ballet world is a kaleidoscope of stunning costumes, intricate dance choreography, and, yes, you guessed it, exquisitely elegant tutus!

And speaking of costumes... the trend is towards a refined elegance! Think rich satins, delicate lace, and captivating velvet! Our ballerinas look absolutely fabulous in a perfectly-fitting corset that defines their figure, a delicate silk bodice adorned with tiny lace flowers and a delicate lace-trimmed neckline that frames the shoulders gracefully.

So let’s get down to the exciting news! I am off to the magnificent Grand Opera House in Paris. The beautiful Parisian dancers have brought their artistry to new heights, captivating audiences worldwide. The grand tutus are lighter, more intricate, allowing for more captivating movements!

You wouldn’t believe the amazing dress shop on Rue de la Paix that I discovered – oh, the fabrics are breathtaking! I am completely mesmerized by this new design, a tiered-layered tutu, a gorgeous silhouette, absolutely beautiful. They’ve just taken it to the next level – and guess what? It comes in pink! Think pale blush pink, perfectly toned for our ballet darling.

Oh darling, I know you're thinking: "How on earth can we wear such wonderful outfits in the streets?!" But trust me, the evolution of ballet attire isn’t just influencing the stage; it is also spilling onto the streets. The 1860s is all about romanticism, flowing forms, and delicate charm. This period embraces beauty in all its simplicity, and the ballet world is a catalyst, spreading this captivating grace beyond the theatre. So, you will find flowing skirts, beautiful, dainty hats, lace detailing, and yes, darling, the inspiration of the tutu – graceful, romantic, and free – finds its way into the world of everyday fashion.

And to round up our #TutuTuesday for today – did you know this is the year that our fabulous tutu fashion legend, Marie Taglioni, decided to take a break from the stage? Can you imagine? I wouldn’t be able to stay away from the stage even for a day, But you know what? This remarkable dancer had given 23 glorious years to the world of dance and deserves a grand ovation! I think, our fabulous tutus are a little homage to her amazing dedication and what a glorious era we live in where dance is appreciated, respected, and oh so loved!

But darling, this is only a snippet of what this glorious date holds. I hope you have enjoyed a little dip into the fashion and flair of this delightful date! Do leave me your comments on your favorite tutu trend of all time. We could write a whole book of tutu trends together, right? You know, we can find inspiration everywhere. From the stages of St. Petersburg to the avenues of Paris and London.

Now off to find some beautiful tutus, I’ll see you all next Tuesday for more Pink-tutu history!

Don’t forget to catch me at the Grand Opera House if you happen to be in Paris, or if you are planning a train journey to the Royal Opera House in London. Who knows, maybe I'll even be making an appearance in The Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. The whole world is my stage, and tutus are my muse!

And one more thing, don’t forget: it’s always the right time to twirl in pink!

See you next Tuesday, darlings!
