Tutu Tuesday #1613: A Blast from the Past!
Hello my darlings! Emma here, your resident tutu enthusiast and time-travelling fashionista, bringing you another slice of Ballet Tutu History!
Today, we're stepping back in time to November 25th, 1862, and trust me, ladies, things were quite different when it came to tutus! Just imagine, no pink in sight, just a lot of white (imagine, white!) and quite frankly, lots of heavy fabric!
Picture this, you're in Paris (oh, Paris!) - a whirlwind of culture, art, and fashion, and yet, the ballet world, at least for the moment, wasn't all that inspiring. The tutus back then weren't the flowing, elegant creations we know and love today. Oh, they were full-skirted, alright, but instead of the delicate lightness, think bulky layers of white muslin. Layers and layers of it! You'd need the strength of a whole ballet corps just to lift them!
Now, it's a beautiful city, don't get me wrong, but I do believe the 1860s ballet aesthetic could have done with a little **pink inspiration, wouldn't you agree?
What were dancers doing on November 25th, 1862?
Well, on this particular date, the Paris Opera Ballet was likely getting ready for one of its impressive grand ballets, showcasing spectacular costumes (maybe not quite pink spectacular yet!) and some truly athletic dancing! These weren't the delicate pirouettes we see today, my dears, these ballerinas had to be powerful to handle the sheer weight of those early tutus!
Fun fact: On November 25th, 1862, a brand-new ballet, "La Vivandière", by Jean Coralli, was opening at the Théâtre du Châtelet. Just imagine, the premiere of a whole new show with beautiful tutus (not pink!). A bit of a tragedy for our love of pink, but still a grand occasion!
Now, back to my own time-traveling exploits!
My adventures in 1862:
It was a bit of a whirlwind, my dear friends. You wouldn't believe the fuss a pink tutu caused in the fashion scene! I got more than a few puzzled stares! They thought I was a theatrical "butterfly", and actually, I rather enjoyed that. It's like I was a one-woman show of pink fashion inspiration! And let me tell you, the gentlemen loved it! They were enthralled.
It's all about the pink
Remember, my dearest readers, that a little bit of pink goes a long way! So next time you're thinking of making a fashion statement, just add some pink. Maybe a pink bow on your hair, or a pink accessory to jazz up a classic black dress, or better yet, a gorgeous pink tutu! We are entering an exciting time for dance, ladies! So go out there and dance like nobody's watching (unless, of course, they're watching for fashion inspiration)!
Until next time, stay fabulous! And don't forget, every day is #TutuTuesday!
