#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 13th January 1863

Hello darlings!

Welcome back to another delightful #TutuTuesday here at www.pink-tutu.com! It’s Emma here, your very own tutu-obsessed time-travelling fashionista, and today we’re whisking ourselves back to 13th January 1863, a year packed with excitement in the world of ballet! As always, my gorgeous pink tutu is packed, ready for another time-hopping adventure, and today’s stop takes us to Paris, oh-la-la! (The only time I prefer French to English is when I'm shopping for haute couture! ;) )

This week, we're exploring the beginning of the "tutu-mania", which swept across the stage in the 1840s and 1850s. You see, before this, ballet costumes were quite a bit more dramatic - imagine billowing, floor-length skirts and heavy fabrications - a far cry from the delicate elegance of the tutus we know and love!

Back in 1863, dancers like the legendary Carlotta Grisi were absolutely conquering the stage in these lightweight and flowing tutus, showcasing graceful movement with freedom. Think of whirlwind pirouettes, splashes of shimmering silk, and delicate, feathery movements. The shortened tutus, constructed from tulle and silk, revolutionised ballet, empowering the dancers to showcase their physicality and grace with breathtaking, ethereal ease.

Now, I might not be able to wear my pink tutu to the 19th century - let's just say those colour choices were a little more muted back then! - but I've absolutely fallen in love with the look. Picture a billowing, tiered confection of tulle, meticulously layered and delicately hand-sewn, designed to create floating, breathtaking movements and showcase every turn and arabesque. A touch of luxurious satin and perhaps a sprinkling of sequins complete the perfect romantic ballet look!

I imagine the theatre must have been buzzing with anticipation when those first shortened tutus glided onto the stage, an electrifying glimpse into a new age of beauty and dance! So elegant! So romantic! Just seeing those beautifully crafted tutus in my mind's eye makes me want to twirl in pure joy!

While the 1840s and 1850s saw the rise of the tutus we adore, 1863 is marking another fantastic time for ballet in France - the year of the first ever "Grand Prix de l'Opera!" Think of it like the biggest ballet talent show imaginable! Can you picture the excitement and nerves, the gorgeous costumes, the stunning performances, all culminating in the selection of the best new talent for the grand stage? It must have been pure theatrical magic!

Of course, with all this ballet history happening, I couldn’t possibly resist spending some time on my favourite French shopping street. You know me, I'm utterly devoted to fabric and fashion!

This 13th January 1863, it’s all about a grand selection of beautifully handcrafted tulle and silk, perfectly tailored for that floating, fairy-like elegance. I could just picture my self walking through a world of fabrics! Just imagine, darlings! The gentle crinkle of the tulle, the rich, luxurious feel of satin - I practically feel my pink tutu starting to move just thinking about it!

Now, I just love my journeys back in time, but getting here is the exciting bit! It’s all about those lovely train journeys - travelling through rolling hills and picturesque towns - a view so beautifully quaint and timeless! It's like a perfect scene right out of my favourite novel! As I settle into my carriage seat, my lovely pink tutu is safe in my trusty travel bag, ready to embark on another fantastical time-travel adventure! But of course, before my departure, a final glimpse at the stage - those captivating dance movements and mesmerising music always set my heart racing!

So there you have it, darling! My #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History for January 13th 1863! It's an absolute delight to step back into time, isn't it? Don't forget to visit my next week’s blog to find out all about the captivating world of ballet! I'll be there, tutu ready, to explore another date in time! Until then, happy twirling!
