Tutu Tuesday #1645: A Peek into the Past - 1863, My Dearest Darlings!

Hello, my precious tutu-loving darlings! It's your favourite pink-clad time traveler, Emma, back with another edition of Tutu Tuesday! Today we're taking a magical trip back in time, to the year 1863! Grab your favourite teacup, a slice of Victoria sponge, and let's whisk ourselves away to the world of tutus back then, shall we?

Ah, 1863 - what a delightful year it was! Imagine: cobbled streets, the aroma of freshly baked bread wafting from the bakeries, and a world brimming with elegant attire and spirited performances. Oh, the grandeur of the theatre in those days! While the tutus of this era wouldn't quite match our modern day, feather-light creations, they were still captivating!

Whimsical & Flourishing - A Blast From the Past!

Firstly, my lovelies, let's be clear: 1863 wasn't quite the era for the bouncy, flowing, full tutus we know and adore today. Think shorter skirts, delicate fabrics and a whole lot of embellishments! The Romantic Ballet era was all about intricate choreography and lyrical movements, so the tutus were made to flow gracefully around the dancers' bodies.

Think layers of tulle, lavish embroidery, and plenty of ruffled lace! Remember the legendary Carlotta Grisi in Giselle, that is what we are talking about. So many delightful frills! Those beautiful tutus were definitely meant to captivate the audience, and the designers certainly did not shy away from embellishing them! The result? Absolute wonderment.

A Blast of Color!

Now, here's where things get interesting: While white remained a favoured shade, my dearest lovelies, 1863 was bursting with bold, vibrant colours! Can you picture it? Crimson red, vibrant blue, and lush emerald green twirling gracefully on stage! The dancers were like walking rainbows! Can't you just see their tutus glistening under the candlelight, just a spectacle of vibrant movement and shimmering beauty? Oh, I dream of performing in one of those tutus!

Paris, My Paris!

Of course, darling, the epicentre of all things theatrical and tutus in 1863 was none other than our beloved Paris! This city of lights was bustling with innovation and creativity in the world of ballet. It was home to the renowned Paris Opera Ballet, and it was there that the art form was evolving and reaching new heights. Think La Sylphide, one of the earliest ballets, all graceful steps and intricate footwork, accompanied by some spectacular tutu designs, and don't forget, all under a magnificent chandelier in the Paris Opera! Oh la la, what a sight!

Fashion & Inspiration - Ballet Everywhere!

Now, I do have to mention a little secret that we're not allowed to divulge. You see, my travels take me everywhere and sometimes I end up where tutus are...not allowed! Imagine that! So when I find myself in such a place I don't get to perform as I usually do, I find I love seeing what everyone else is wearing, even if there isn't a single tutu! Well, darling, can you believe it? Even though we aren't wearing a tutu, this is 1863 and all across the continent, there was a fascination with tutu styles! The ladies were sporting dresses that were as flamboyant and intricate as any dancer’s costumes, showcasing their femininity with flouncy layers, cinched waists, and dramatic puffed sleeves.

Just look at the paintings, those paintings have everything - layers upon layers of ruffles, with dramatic flounces and even big, billowing sleeves! Imagine yourself in one of those gowns! And imagine how that inspired the tutu designs in ballet - beautiful. There is nothing more feminine, is there?

A Week of History & Style

Oh, and for those curious souls among you who love a bit of history: Did you know that the seventh of July, 1863 was a day of joyful celebration for the little darlings in America? They declared Independence from England, all for liberty and rights and, I guess, that includes a right to choose your own shoes for a performance. Now, this is truly what we are talking about: the beautiful right of freedom of expression! It also means some exciting times ahead, so I should hurry off and pack my tutu for a little American tour, maybe some time in the future.

That's it for this week, my darling friends. Tune in next Tuesday for another thrilling trip back in time and more tales of tutus, from across the world. I can't wait to show you what I discover in the ballet archives next!

Don't forget to tell your friends to follow #TutuTuesday on Instagram! Let's celebrate this amazing fashion trend, no matter the era!

Until next week, stay bright and fabulous!

Love,

Emma
