Tutu Tuesday: The Ballet Tutu Story - September 8th 1863

#1654

Oh hello darlings! It’s your favourite pink tutu clad ballerina, Emma, and welcome back to another fab Tutu Tuesday, dedicated to all things fluffy and frilly! This week we’re taking a whirl through time and stepping right into the year 1863, an exciting time for the world of dance - at least for us ballet buffs!

Imagine, dear reader, bustling through the cobbled streets of Paris on a crisp September morning, and then popping into the hallowed halls of the OpĂ©ra Garnier for a thrilling performance of Giselle - yes, my darlings, a real classic, as fresh as ever in 1863! It’s always fascinating to step back in time, isn't it? I mean, imagine the joy of discovering a new story on stage, with breathtaking choreography and costumes that transport you straight to a magical realm of twirls and graceful leaps.

Speaking of costumes, today I’m going to dive into the tutu's story, taking us right back to this particular date in history - 8th September 1863. The French fashionista EugĂ©nie, Empress of France, is making headlines by setting the stage for a Parisian Ballet spectacle that’s truly revolutionary! No, darling, not because the music's different or the dancers do something never seen before - well, maybe not so different - it's the costumes, the glorious tutus! It seems she's demanding they all be made of this brand new material - tulle!

Now, tulle - that lightweight, delicate netting, made with silk, yes, the silk worm itself! It's quite a departure from the old, stiff fabric used before, isn’t it? This new tutu silhouette gives those ballet ballerinas a freedom of movement that’s practically
 well
heavenly! Think billowing, airy lightness rather than stiff, bulky structure. Tutu design just took a graceful leap forward, my darlings!

So this exciting date marks the beginning of a real tulle revolution! Tulle tutus, perfectly complementing the grace of the ballet form - oh, it's a beautiful thing to see on stage, it truly is! I love me a tulle tutu and, darling, the magic really isn’t confined to the stage, don’t you agree? The ballet, for me, it’s a symphony of movement and creativity that shines in a beautifully crafted, ethereal costume. It's all about artistry and, oh, a good dash of glamour!

But of course, here in London we are keeping pace with our dear Paris and this week is a special one - our darling London’s Theatre Royal is having the debut of a little gem called, “The Little Mermaid”. Now I hear it’s based on that charming children’s fairytale of Andersen. It is quite the delight, if I may say so myself - and, darling, you'll never believe what is in store for us. Well, of course, I'm talking about the divine tutus on stage! This Little Mermaid, she has a most captivating tutu, crafted entirely of shells and seaweed, a perfect example of stage fashion at its most exquisite!

This kind of costume design, oh darling, it truly brings fairytale visions to life - you really do feel like you are transported to a place of magic and wonder. It’s about being whimsical and carefree and letting your imagination run wild! Don't you feel just a little bit giddy yourself, dear reader? I do. And there’s something so charmingly theatrical about it all, something captivating, doesn't it make your heart skip a beat? Of course, we just love the way these wonderful tutus can enhance and celebrate the graceful and dramatic performances on stage!

It really doesn't matter whether you’re on the stage or taking a leisurely stroll down a sunlit avenue, darling, remember that pink tutu, always a fashion staple. You know the pink tulle and the swirling layers - what else could there be to express such joyous lightness and confidence, to convey such joy? Oh, the grace and charm of a pink tutu - I love to see those billowing layers floating across the stage, especially when they’re a glorious shade of pink!

But hold on, darlings! I wouldn't dream of ending this Tutu Tuesday without a little bit of exciting news: It’s time to start thinking about the autumn fashions that will grace the streets of London. It seems, this season, everything is set to revolve around
yes, you guessed it – the skirt ! This is so thrilling! Imagine, layers and layers of silk, so billowing and soft! Just as much flow and graceful movement as the glorious tutus of the stage, don’t you think?

Now, let's put on our shopping shoes and visit our favourite couture boutiques. A wonderful selection of skirt-related fashion pieces, from floor length gowns to daring shorter lengths, ready to create new trends. It seems fashion is looking to emulate that airy and charming ballet silhouette - don't you just love that touch of stage magic coming out in everything? I do!

For a day filled with a little ballet history, a touch of London chic, and a dash of Parisian inspiration, our darling fashion story for this Tutu Tuesday is all wrapped up! I’m going to twirl my way back to Derbyshire for the rest of my journey. Let’s all hope our darling railway train will be on time. I have a special Ballet street performance in Buxton on the 13th of this month that needs rehearsing. And I will make sure it will have an exciting, innovative, new tutu. Remember, my dears, embrace your inner ballerina and make a dash of joy and fun a part of every single day. Oh, and remember those ballet classes and performances, and of course, do remember your Pink Tutu!

Until next time, darling, keep twirling!

Yours,

Emma xx
