Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, darling tutu lovers! It’s me, Emma, your ever-so-slightly-obsessed-with-tutus blogger, and today, for #TutuTuesday, we’re twirling back to 1865! Buckle up, because we’re taking a grand voyage through time… by train! 🚄
Ah, 1865! The air hums with the excitement of the Industrial Revolution, and everything feels so deliciously new! London, in particular, is bustling with energy. Everyone’s talking about the newly-opened Metropolitan Railway (fancy name for a tube!), and it’s truly a wonder of engineering! I must admit, I adore trains – there’s something truly elegant about whizzing across the country with all my fancy petticoats swirling in the wind.
And speaking of fancy, dear reader, let’s talk tutus! Now, 1865 was a pivotal year for the tutu, especially for our darling ballerinas! The tutu wasn't the whimsical, bouncy number we adore today. Imagine a more "classical" style - it was a bit heavier, a bit longer.Think romantic, flowy, almost… Grecian if you will. They often involved tulle that came in multiple layers and flowed down in a very romantic way!
So what was a darling like me doing in 1865, you ask? I had the most glorious day! After a divine cup of tea in a salon with a charming little bonbon, I hopped onto a carriage - which wasn’t pulled by a horse, just a nice little horseless motor vehicle they call an omnibus! – and set off for a glorious afternoon at the Her Majesty's Theatre. It’s such a majestic building, you know. Just the perfect backdrop for a glorious opera! Oh, the opulent sets, the breathtaking costumes, the music - divine! You know what? The dancing was simply exquisite, with beautiful pirouettes, arabesques, and an astonishing leaps that made my heart skip a beat!
Later that evening, after yet another lovely tea with friends (some delicious pastries so good they deserved a round of applause! 🎉), I decided to venture out to the famous Covent Garden. I just had to browse some exquisite stores in this buzzing, vibrant district, with their beautiful, eye-catching boutiques. Oh, it’s such a dreamland! Every corner is a treasure, just brimming with all kinds of amazing fashion! Now, while I was there, I discovered the most exquisite vintage piece – a white tulle and silk ballet tutu, still so charming and elegant! I absolutely had to have it, dear readers! It will be the perfect addition to my growing tutu collection!
However, all those gorgeous costumes are what really sparked my curiosity today. And what’s even more exciting is that today is the day Princess Alexandra of Denmark will be visiting the beautiful town of Derbyshire, in England! I wonder if I'll catch a glimpse of her and maybe she might wear a lovely ballerina tutu herself?! After all, the future Queen’s fondness for the performing arts is no secret!
Of course, dear reader, I had to put together a special outfit to celebrate. How could I do any different when it comes to #TutuTuesday? I opted for a pink satin petticoat - it makes me feel so fabulous and I'm so excited for a fun trip down memory lane with this incredible historic date!
Until next Tuesday, dear reader, keep on twirling, keep on smiling and keep on looking fabulous! And who knows, maybe even you will join me in rocking a lovely pink tutu someday! 💖
