#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 19th September 1865 - Post #1760
Hello darlings! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things tutu-tastic! It's #TutuTuesday and this week, my trusty time machine whisked me back to a most enchanting era - the glorious 1860s! Oh, how I love this period! The fashion, the dance, the romanticism... swoon And as always, our focus is on the most wondrous invention in all of fashion: the ballet tutu!
Today, 19th September 1865, I find myself in the heart of Paris. It's bustling with life and excitement. A carriage procession carrying the Emperor Napoleon III and his stunning Empress Eugénie is making its way to the Theatre Imperial de l'Opera. A magnificent sight! It's practically a prerequisite to attend the opera wearing a gown adorned with elaborate flounces, frills, and feathers - quite the affair! The Opera house itself, with its towering facade and magnificent interior, is just breathtaking. Can you imagine? All those chandeliers glistening like diamonds under the Parisian sky...sighs dreamily
A Little Bit of Tutu History
Now, before we delve into the precise history of the tutu in the 1860s, a little context for you lovely readers! The tutu, in its modern form, began to take shape in the early 19th century, with a pivotal moment in 1832. Marie Taglioni, a renowned ballerina, decided to wear a revolutionary, much shorter costume that allowed for freer movement. Her groundbreaking creation - the tutu! It allowed for the elegant and ethereal pirouettes and leaps that we all adore.
In the 1860s, the tutu was beginning to evolve further. The focus was on achieving a graceful, fluid line. A slightly longer skirt, often with multiple layers of tulle, was favoured, which beautifully emphasized the graceful curves of the ballerinas. And oh my, these ladies could twirl!
The 1860s were a truly spectacular period for ballet, and the tutus truly took center stage! Can you imagine the elegance and precision of these ballerinas, their bodies seemingly weightless as they flew through the air? It's truly an enchanting spectacle, a visual masterpiece, that has inspired dancers and audiences alike for centuries.
Ballet Beyond the Stage
And my darlings, ballet's allure goes beyond the grand stage of the Opera house. Even a simple trip to the Champs-Elysees for a spot of window shopping at Worth or a picnic in the Jardin du Luxembourg becomes more magical when adorned with a tutu. Don't you think? I certainly do!
Now, as the evening draws to a close, and the stars begin to twirl their way into the velvet sky, I find myself wishing I could simply float away on a cloud of tulle and champagne dreams. Oh, the wonder!
