#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History, January 23rd, 1866 - A Tutu-ly Marvelous Time! 🩰✨
Hello lovelies! Welcome back to another fabulously pink edition of my #TutuTuesday blog, coming to you live from the enchanting, exciting heart of… well, where we are this week is a surprise, darling! You know me, I love a good adventure. This week, I’m whisked away on a train ride to Paris, where they've got some rather thrilling tutu news, but let's rewind back to our date, shall we?
It's the 23rd of January, 1866, and, drumroll, please… this is the exact day Tchaikovsky, the brilliant musical maestro, begins composing Swan Lake. Can you believe it? Such a classic, born on a chilly Parisian January day! How poetic, how divine! Imagine all the incredible ballerinas gliding across the stage in their enchanting tutus, to his hauntingly beautiful music! ✨
Now, picture this: it's Paris in 1866, all hustle and bustle. Horse-drawn carriages, a million bustling shops - and oh, the fashion! Such bonnets, such beautiful corsets, such magnificent ball gowns…
Speaking of ball gowns, wouldn't it be splendid to add a tutu? We all know, darlings, that a tutu isn't just for ballerinas! (It’s truly anybody's business!) I'm wearing mine as we speak - a delicate blush pink with fluffy tulle layers and dainty silk ribbons, topped off with a perfectly positioned corsage. So tutu-fabulous! 💖
In these vibrant Parisian streets, even a plain tulle skirt with its playful twirl is enough to turn heads. And with the current penchant for theatrical dance, it makes sense that these ethereal, beautiful creations would be captivating everyone, especially on such a historical date for ballet.
Where was the tutu scene at in 1866? Well, darling, I must confess, not quite at the level we enjoy today, but things are blossoming. Think more ballerina-style dancing, not quite the dramatic spectacle you see now. In the era before pointe shoes really took off, the tutus were still quite full and flowing. Think about those stunning classical ballerina tutus that sweep so gracefully with every plié - we are getting a sneak peek at that timeless elegance. It's not yet the minimalist, streamlined, sculpted perfection we know and adore, but hey, all good things take time!
Now, back to Swan Lake, shall we? Today, in 1866, Tchaikovsky was a hot commodity - he was only 32 and was making quite the splash with his dazzling musical scores. I can imagine the air abuzz in Paris with the buzz about this ballet. He'd be writing music for his ballet at this very moment, and while he may not be picturing a full, multi-layered tutu just yet (it wouldn't truly take shape until years later, in 1877!), imagine those exquisite musical flourishes... Just a touch of tutu magic and it all comes alive! 🩰
What is happening today? Well, darling, I must confess, this trip is all about fashion, theatre, and dance! I just had to make my way over to the Théâtre Impérial de l’Opéra to see a lovely production of La Esmeralda, one of the crème de la crème of Romantic ballet! Oh my! I'm just dying to tell you all about the captivating performance and its magnificent tutus, so I’ll be doing just that in a post coming very soon. Trust me, you're in for a real treat.
I am simply in heaven here in Paris. Such enchanting shops overflowing with exquisite, silky fabric and elegant Parisian ladies all so beautifully put-together… You know me, darling, always in pursuit of more delightful tutu inspiration. I'm picking up some lovely new lace trim for my next little creation and trying on a handful of the finest corsets that will give that perfect tutu silhouette! The fabric store I just popped into is like a little slice of heaven! And as you may have gathered from this pink-tinted adventure…
Pink? Oh darling, I simply adore it! I'm convinced there's a shade of pink to make everyone happy, even the most dour of critics. Who would have thought that such a pretty color could make such a bold statement? Now I know some of you have been itching to wear one of your own! It's only a matter of time, darling. Every little pink detail, from that delicate tulle whisper to a full-on ballerina skirt, gives that little burst of pink magic. I truly believe that we can all find a shade to bring out the happy little dancer inside us, so why not join the pink revolution and wear a tutu of your very own? 💖
It's never too late to channel that inner ballet goddess, and let's be honest, darlings, who doesn't want a little more fun and fabulousness in their life? Live a little, twirl a little! And just remember: every day can be a Tutu-day. 🩰 💖
Well, my darling tutu fans, until next week's #TutuTuesday, don’t forget to stay happy, stay glamorous, and most importantly, wear pink! 😘
Love,
Emma xoxo
