Tutu Tuesday: A Glimpse Into 1866! (Blog Post #1788)

Hello my darling tutus,

It's Tuesday, and that means it's time for another exciting instalment of Ballet Tutu History! This week we're taking a little trip back in time, to the 3rd of April, 1866, a date I simply can't resist exploring.

First of all, let me just say - travelling back in time by train is such an adventure! Imagine, the steam, the rattling carriages, and the excitement of being a little bit lost in a different era. Plus, with my vintage wardrobe packed with gorgeous pink dresses, lace gloves and of course, my beloved pink tutus, I truly feel like a little piece of 1866 fashion history.

But what were those glorious dancers wearing in 1866? Let me tell you, the world of ballet was truly enchanting! There wasn't a hint of that sporty, modern-day, stretchy attire yet, no, we're talking all frills, layers and delicate, flowing silhouettes.

The tutu had evolved somewhat from the classic Roman period with the dancers wearing what we'd now call a "Romantic" tutu, that beautiful, layered, diaphanous tutu which is so very elegant, isn't it? Imagine swirling skirts made from tulle and silk, catching the light as they gracefully leapt across the stage!

Now, in 1866, the stars of the ballet were absolutely adored! The performances were an important part of high society, a way to display status and sophistication. Think opulent theaters filled with dazzling gowns, elaborate hats and glittering jewels. Imagine, sitting in one of those beautiful old theaters, watching the elegant dancers in their fluffy tutus, feeling a real sense of enchantment - that’s what it would have felt like.

The tutus at this time were simply beautiful and it would be so delightful to witness a ballet performance with this romantic and layered style. There are times when I travel back in time where I truly regret that we don’t dress in such a stylish and elegant way in the 21st century. Just imagine the magic we could create if we did!

And as a fun little fact, today in 1866, the esteemed ballet master Marius Petipa, famous for his classical ballets like The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake, was hard at work on his new ballet called The Pharaoh's Daughter, I bet he's feeling the inspiration of all those beautifully embellished costumes, just as we're feeling the excitement today!

So, what do we take from all this? Remember, tutus are not just about dance, they're about a passion for elegance, a belief in beauty and the joy of celebrating the body. My fellow tutus, don’t be afraid to experiment! Play around with colors and styles to express your own unique take on this wonderful, expressive art. I hope you love all the wonderful tutus that you create for yourself!

Now, off I go to explore the beautiful Parisian ballet shops! My favourite part of time travel is finding those vintage tutus and lace - just wait until I show you what treasures I uncover on my next adventure!

See you next week!
