#TutuTuesday: A Glimpse Into Ballet History - February 19th, 1867! 🩰🌸
Hello my darlings!
Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, www.pink-tutu.com. It’s Emma here, your resident pink tutu-clad time traveller and all-round ballet enthusiast! It’s a glorious #TutuTuesday and I'm positively thrilled to whisk you all away on another trip through the magical world of tutus!
This week, we're waltzing our way back to February 19th, 1867. As always, I'm making sure my time travel ensemble is absolutely fabulous. A lusciously pink tulle tutu, naturally, and a delicate floral crown – just a touch of vintage charm, you know? 🌸 It's so important to embrace the spirit of the era when you’re travelling through time!
The Victorian Era: Where Ballet is Blooming!
Now, let's get those dancing shoes on and talk ballet! The year is 1867 and we're right in the heart of the Victorian Era, a time when elegance and refinement were all the rage! Ballet was thriving, darling, particularly in Paris – the undeniable capital of the ballet world at the time! The ballet houses were ablaze with colour and dazzling displays of grace and talent.
Oh! I've Just Got to Tell you about the Opéra de Paris! It was the most exquisite setting! The décor – exquisite, simply exquisite! And those tutus… I simply had to do some serious shopping during my visit. It seems ballet dancers weren't all about frilly tulle and pale pink just yet. Instead, their tutus were more elaborate – lots of velvet, satin and rich embroidery. A touch of theatrical grandeur for sure!
But it wasn't just about the costumes. Oh no, the dancers were phenomenal! They captivated audiences with their technique, their fluidity – a ballet lover's dream! They moved like graceful butterflies, fluttering effortlessly through the air.
And Who's on Stage This Fine Day?
I made my way to the Opéra Garnier for a special treat: a performance featuring the dazzling Mademoiselle Emma Livry! The epitome of ballerina elegance! Just a quick bit of history for you – Emma Livry was one of the most beloved dancers of her time! They loved her artistry and passion. They even made her a ‘Prima Ballerina’ – a real honour in the world of ballet!
Now, the show wouldn't be complete without a bit of intrigue, would it? Apparently, during this period there was a bit of a scandal around a famous French ballet dancer called Fanny Elssler. She had dared to leave the Opéra de Paris – imagine that! – to dance on the Parisian stages of L'Hippodrome. Shocking! Unthinkable!
It's all part of the drama of ballet history, my dears! Ballet's full of captivating characters, and just like that, my time in the past is coming to an end! Time to head back to my lovely home in Derbyshire. It's always good to come back to the good old British countryside. The fields are blossoming with pink, a fitting sight for a ballerina!
The Next #TutuTuesday: Stay Tuned for Another Blast from the Past!
I'm simply bursting with ideas for next week's blog post! Who knows what vintage fashion gems and balletic treasures we'll unearth on the 19th of February, 1868. It's always exciting, travelling back in time and sharing my finds with all of you! And until then, my sweet darlings, remember to always embrace the power of a pink tutu! It's the perfect expression of joy and grace, always a delightful reminder of the magic of ballet!
Don't forget to follow me on my socials for a sneak peek at my latest time-travelling escapades. We'll be taking pictures, shopping, and soaking up the ballet scene!

Did you know? 19th-century ballet fashion also embraced bloomers! This form-fitting garment helped ballet dancers move freely and allowed for those breathtaking leaps and turns that they are famous for. But more than that, they represented a tiny step toward greater freedom for women! Talk about empowering fashion! 😉
So there you have it, another incredible adventure into the world of ballet! Keep your eyes on your screen for a fresh post every Tuesday, and remember, always embrace your inner ballerina. Tutu be yourself! 😉
