#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1867-05-14

Hello my dearest tutu lovers! It’s Emma here from Derbyshire, back again for another fabulous #TutuTuesday! Today I'm taking us back to May 14th, 1867. Grab your tiaras and prepare for a trip to Paris - because you’re about to see how history danced!

It’s always a delight to go back in time for these #TutuTuesday posts, isn't it? Especially for this one - just imagine, Paris! The fashion! The food! Oh my goodness, the tutus! 😉 Today's historical escapade was made possible by a spectacular ballet performance last night. It was at the OpĂ©ra Garnier, you know, that magnificent building with all the marble and the chandelier – oh it’s such a glamorous setting, just perfect for ballet! I’ve got to tell you, they've certainly got the theatre scene sussed out here in France, and I absolutely adore the French tutus – the cut, the colour, the artistry! It’s so exquisite, really quite inspiring!

Now, for our #TutuTuesday post - did you know that back in 1867, the world was celebrating something rather exciting? A Grand Exhibition! I don’t mean just a market stall in the local village, no no no, this was something huge! Held in Paris, they called it the “Exposition Universelle”. I just think, “How splendid!” Imagine! Artists from all over the globe, their finest creations, brought together in one fantastic spectacle of ingenuity! What a glorious time to have been alive! Just picture yourself walking through those grand halls, with music playing, and art all around!

The 1867 Exposition was a big deal, showcasing the newest advancements in machinery and design. Of course, being in the fashion-forward hub of Paris, fashion had to be involved. There were whole halls dedicated to it, brimming with beautiful gowns, stunning hats and elegant accessories!

Of course, as a true tutu enthusiast, the biggest treat for me was discovering all the amazing dance costumes displayed. Some of them were truly enchanting, perfect for ballet! All that delicate tulle, delicate laces, exquisite embellishments, just waiting for ballerinas to pirouette and jeté in!

Now, before we get carried away imagining tutus, let’s think about the specific fashion influences for the ballet of this time. The romanticism of the 19th century, which we've discussed previously, still influenced tutus tremendously! You could imagine ballerina's floating across the stage in wispy tulle skirts. As the century progressed, ballet designs got slightly shorter and more form-fitting. This change mirrored a growing focus on highlighting the ballerina’s strong muscles, and her movements, making the dancers more athletic than ever! I can see that in my mind’s eye, it was such a breathtakingly beautiful shift, truly, quite marvelous.

Of course, no historical journey is complete without a touch of modern thinking, right? 😉 Imagine how fabulous a pink tutu would have been at the Exposition Universelle! You can just imagine it. A shimmering sea of delicate pink, swirling around those grand halls! The excitement, the exhilaration - you could feel the energy rippling through those crowds, wouldn’t that be incredible? I wouldn’t have wanted to miss that event for the world, especially in my own pink tutu, of course.

Now, a little insider information: to all you amazing dancers, I know you’ve probably already realised this, but ballet and tutus really started to take off as the 19th century continued, you see? And with each new invention, it just became so much more spectacular, a real visual treat for everyone! It truly was such an important moment in ballet history. Now, I might not have been a ballerina in that period, but I certainly felt a connection, a magical touch, as I twirled and pirouetted across those beautiful Parisian stages.

There you have it, folks, our #TutuTuesday historical peek at a truly magical moment in time - and a reminder of just how much beauty and artistic talent existed long before our time!
