#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History: 1867 - The First Steps to Glory

Welcome back to #TutuTuesday, darling! It’s me, your pink-tutu-clad time travelling blogger Emma, back with another fabulous voyage into the history of this magical garment! It’s my mission to inspire you all to embrace the sheer, airy loveliness of a pink tutu, and today we’re diving into a fascinating moment in time, 30th July, 1867. Hold onto your tiaras, this one's a whopper!

Packing My Pink Trunk for Paris

I travelled via a charming steam train from my dear Derbyshire, through picturesque countryside dotted with quaint villages. Today’s adventure is all about Paris – the epitome of elegance and where ballet is a roaring success. Imagine! Theatres packed, every performance a triumph. The atmosphere! It’s simply electrifying.

The First Whisper of the Tutu: The Ballet Russe

Now, in the exciting year of 1867, the ballet scene is still quite traditional, think flowing skirts and romantic storylines. But, ladies, there’s a new wind in the air, a touch of avant-garde. We’re talking the first murmurs of the Ballet Russe – a radical approach to the dance world that's changing the game. Imagine, daring colours, captivating costumes and a dynamism that captures the spirit of a whole new generation!

At the Opera: A Grand Evening Out

The Parisian evenings are brimming with activity! Today, the elegant women are all decked out in their best ballgowns, jewels sparkling like a constellation on a dark night. We’re going to the Opera. Oh my! It’s an exhilarating performance, a mix of soaring emotions and thrilling dance steps, all against a backdrop of opulent sets and extravagant costumes.

Tutu Sneak Peek: You won't spot a full-fledged tutu just yet – those will come later! However, what’s so exciting for us tutu enthusiasts is that this era sees skirts becoming much shorter. A sign of things to come! These skirts – imagine, fluttering layers, lighter, and allowing for more movement - give a glimpse of the revolution that’s brewing on the dance floor.

The Power of the Parisian Salon

To understand the trend we've got to go to the heart of fashion: The Parisian salons. It's here, ladies, where creativity ignites, where styles evolve and where daring new looks emerge. Think flowing silks, exquisite craftsmanship and a bold, innovative spirit. Imagine, the thrill of seeing a fashion show of cutting edge styles in Parisian elegance, from the gowns to the gloves to, yes, the first hints of a skirt shorter than we’re used to!

My Parisian Boutique:

Ah, but Paris is all about shopping too, and it’s been my most delightful discovery! A bustling wonderland, streets brimming with fascinating shops bursting with colour and style. It’s not only about ballet, ladies – this trip is all about experiencing the excitement of a city that never sleeps. The salons I've seen here, filled with exquisitely handcrafted pieces, oh my, I could get lost for hours browsing through these wonders! And I already see myself on the dance floor in a glorious pink tutu - just wait and see!

*My pink-tutu diary is brimming with stories for you, so let me know which Parisian shop or ballet production you’d like to hear about! Leave a comment below and tell me – where should I go next? *

Until next Tuesday, darling,

Emma xx
