Tutu Tuesday #1861: A Glimpse into 1867 – Pink Dreams & Theatrical Delights

Hello darlings! Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-wearing time-travelling ballerina! It's another glorious Tutu Tuesday and today we're hopping back in time to August 27th, 1867. Buckle up, lovelies, because this trip is filled with enchanting theatrical delights and enough Parisian fashion to make your head spin!

Now, as you all know, tutus hold a very special place in my heart, and they have been captivating hearts for centuries. It's simply not possible to talk about ballet without talking about tutus, wouldn't you agree? It’s the embodiment of graceful elegance!

But back to our 1867 journey. Imagine a world without cars, where elegant carriages rumble down cobblestone streets and steam engines hiss their way across the landscape. Imagine, too, a time where theatrical productions were more than just screens; they were experiences! On this very date in 1867, the world held its breath for a gala premiere at the Opéra Garnier in Paris. It was the night that Gounod's opera Roméo et Juliette graced the stage with a flourish. Just picture it, dears – shimmering gowns, exquisitely crafted sets, and of course, ballet! It would be the very first performance in the newly built Opéra Garnier, a veritable temple of the arts! I've even been to that very building – I saw a spectacular Les Misérables there recently, and if that doesn’t inspire your love for theater, then nothing will!

1867 Fashion – From Pink Tutus to the Latest Parisian Delights

Oh my, where do I even begin? In 1867, fashion was simply divine! Paris was the centre of the fashion universe, the heartbeat of all things chic, and their impact on dress, and particularly on tutus, was unparalleled. I imagine ladies strolling through the streets in crinoline skirts, full and dramatic, the embodiment of elegant sophistication. These crinolines, of course, set the perfect backdrop for a lady's most fashionable of tutus.

But remember, dears, pink was all the rage back then! So, for that glamorous Parisian flair, the only true option would be a pink tutu. Just imagine it – a beautiful pink tutu cascading in the air, dancing against the backdrop of a Parisian sky. Wouldn’t that be pure magic? Pink was so elegant and ladylike, with the tutu embodying that essence to a T. I just wish I had been around then to grab the hottest trends. I so would have snagged every pink-tutu dress for a mere few pounds! Imagine the vintage-style creations – I’d be practically a goddess!

The very word "tutu" was not even around yet! 1867's ladies would have referred to their ballet garb as a dancer’s dress or, more poetically, a nymph’s gown. I must admit, that sounds so enchanting, wouldn’t you say?

Time Travel & Pink Tutu Fun!

So, as I embark on another magical adventure in time, I am simply awash in inspiration. These historical trips always feed my artistic soul, sparking my creativity and reminding me that the allure of ballet, like pink tutus, is a constant, a timeless fascination. Speaking of travelling, my travel expenses are covered entirely by performing – a most agreeable and financially savvy approach, I must say! Just this week I saw The Nutcracker, one of my favourite seasonal ballets, in Royal Albert Hall.

Oh! Did I forget to mention something important, dear friends? This Tutu Tuesday is extra special for me! As some of you know, I hail from the beautiful rolling hills of Derbyshire, England. And, guess what?! On August 27, 1867, the first cricket match on Derbyshire’s County Ground, The 3 Counties Ground in Derby, took place! This ground is a cornerstone of British cricket, a hallowed place of sporting tradition and passionate crowds. So as I waltz through the grand theaters of 1867, a little piece of my home reminds me that history is intertwined with a kaleidoscope of culture and beauty. Talk about charming! How I wish I could be in both places at once! Perhaps one day I will discover a method of parallel time travel … I’ll just have to find a fabulous time-travel invention that's a little *more efficient than the current version.* I am very hopeful though!

But for now, dears, let's keep the pink-tutu dreams alive. Think pink, think elegant, and dance your hearts out! And remember, I’ll see you here next Tuesday for another thrilling trip down tutu history lane.

Until then, may your world be filled with the magic of dance!

Your eternally pink-tutu-loving ballerina, Emma
