#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - Post 1926: The Rise of the Romantic Tutu 🩰💖
Hello, my lovelies! Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller, ready to take you on another journey through the history of the glorious tutu. Today, we’re skipping back to the 24th of November 1868 - grab your pom-poms and a slice of Victoria sponge, because this one’s a real treat!
Before we delve into the magic, a quick catch-up! I’ve been gallivanting around Europe, hopping between elegant theatres and exquisite ballrooms, gathering insights on how the tutu transformed itself into the beautiful piece of ballet wardrobe we adore today. Oh, and you've just GOT to see the latest trends in Vienna! I’m talking about ruffled gowns and voluminous skirts – pure dreamy elegance! But let's focus on our fabulous tutu timeline.
1868 - The Romantic Era Reaches its Peak:
The year is 1868, and Europe is abuzz with a romantic spirit. Artists, musicians, and, yes, even our ballerinas are reflecting this in their work! The era we lovingly call “Romantic Ballet” is reaching its pinnacle. Imagine sweeping waltzes, ethereal melodies, and…the tutu! Now, the tutu isn't exactly new, but the design is becoming bolder and more romantic, making the dancers appear light and delicate as if they could float away on a single breeze. Think graceful, ethereal tulle flowing like whispers of moonlight – absolutely magical!
From a Short and Poofy to a Long and Dreamy:
Back in the days of Marie Taglioni (remember her?! The original ballet queen!), tutus were quite short, resembling a fluffy pancake. Now, those short, puffy numbers are slowly becoming things of the past. Longer, full-skirted tutus, often reaching almost to the floor, are sweeping across the stage. It's an exciting shift, reflecting the romantic themes of freedom, longing, and escape in the art of dance. Think soaring flights of fancy in every pirouette and elegant leaps across the stage - just pure breathtaking artistry!
But the Transformation Doesn’t Stop There...
This era also brought with it an explosion of colour! The previous years saw mostly white tutus – classic and elegant, of course, but perhaps a tad predictable, wouldn’t you say? Now, colour is taking the stage by storm. Think of the most stunning shades - lavender, blush, celestial blue, and a gorgeous symphony of pastels! Just imagine the enchantment, the magic and the utter charm of seeing a tutu in a delightful lavender hue – pure heaven for this tutu enthusiast!
On the 24th of November 1868...
What exactly was happening on the 24th of November, 1868, you ask? It’s fascinating, really! The most famous ballet, La Sylphide, has been enthralling audiences since its premiere in 1832, and by 1868, this iconic ballet was going strong! What a delightful and timeless classic that even you and I can enjoy!
Imagine a ballerina gliding across the stage in a whisper-soft, ethereal tulle tutu, the shimmering fabric dancing around her legs, the air infused with magical grace - truly a magical spectacle! And can we talk about the iconic white tutu that is a symbol of La Sylphide? Every little ballerina around the globe is familiar with it. And trust me, the little ballerina in me absolutely swoons over the exquisite designs!
Why The Romantic Era Was So Special
The Romantic Era was truly a period of artistic liberation! Ballerinas were pushing boundaries, exploring new expressions, and pushing the limits of ballet as an art form! It was a a time of passion and romantic expression in ballet, reflecting the burgeoning trends of the era!
What I love Most About Tutudom:
And just like you, I'm a tutu fanatic! It’s just not a proper ballet without it, wouldn’t you agree? The Romantic Tutu changed ballet forever. It created a new visual language of romantic expression, offering a captivating blend of lightness, delicacy and grace that continues to enthral audiences! It's all about the dramatic swirls, the flowing fabric that seems to defy gravity. The tutu truly transforms the dancer into a creature of light and air, embodying the very essence of romantic ballet.
