Hiya darlings! Emma here, back for another peek into the glorious history of our beloved tutus. Today, we're stepping back in time, all the way to March 23rd, 1869.
Oh, how I wish I could go back to those days! Just imagine, London bustling with life, carriages clinking along the cobbled streets, and ladies in their exquisite gowns and bonnets heading to the theatre! Now that's a Tuesday I wouldn't mind revisiting. I'd pack my pinkest tutu, my finest parasol, and a hatbox brimming with enough silk ribbons to make my heart sing!
But enough dreaming, let's dive into the tutus!
1869, well, that was just such an exciting year for the ballet world. You see, a real Parisian sensation was happening, and trust me, everyone was talking about it! The iconic "La Esmeralda" by Pugni and Saint-Leon, a ballet filled with drama, passion, and... you guessed it... Tutus! Imagine all the lovely, swirling fabrics, the delicate steps, the graceful figures!
Now, we're all familiar with the puffy, layered tutus, right? The ones we all adore seeing on stage. But back in 1869, those were a little different. The tutus were more delicate, more simple, less dramatic. It was about elegance, not exaggeration! The dancers moved with such ease and fluidity, like ballerinas flitting amongst the petals of a giant flower.
I tell you, seeing those early tutus... it just gives me inspiration for new ways to wear my own! Perhaps I'll create a whole new Tutu Tuesday look inspired by the grace and simplicity of 1869! Oh, darling, the possibilities are endless.
But it wasn't just La Esmeralda that kept the tutu world abuzz back then. It was all about ballet as entertainment. Going to the ballet was the ultimate social occasion! You'd dress in your finest clothes, go to the theatre, enjoy the performance, and see and be seen! Imagine how much fun that must have been!
Now, speaking of fun, who's up for a bit of Tutu Tuesday travel?! On this very day in 1869, I would have been hopping on the train down to London, tutu in tow, of course! The journey from Derbyshire to London was a grand adventure, especially back then. You'd have to sit for hours on end, perhaps alongside a distinguished gentleman in a top hat! Just picturing it gives me goosebumps... the thrill of it all, the anticipation of a fabulous show!
Speaking of theatres, let's talk about where they were showing "La Esmeralda." Now, this is exciting, darling, because it wasn't just about the Covent Garden. The Paris Opera was, and still is, the most magnificent place to see a ballet, and it was a key centre for the dance world in 1869. Paris was THE place to be!
Oh, my dear, you see what I mean? Just like today, we are in a beautiful time for ballet, where the tradition is cherished and new dances come into being all the time. What a thrilling adventure it is to be a ballerina today!
