#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - February 8th 1870 - Post #1989
Hello dearies!
It's Emma here, your pink tutu-loving time travelling ballerina blogger, and this week, my Tutu Tuesday blog post takes us right back to the year 1870! Oh, my darlings, it's been such a whirlwind of a week, a whirlwind of pink, of tutus and of fashion, that I can hardly even put it into words! I started the week back in good old Derbyshire, where my life's ambition (as you know, you dear readers) is to convince absolutely everyone to don a pink tutu - even the Queen, wouldn't it be fabulous to see her in a tutu?!
My heart fluttered like a hummingbird's wings when my time-traveling skills sent me zipping through time right to Paris. Ooh la la, can I even begin to describe it?! Just imagine the style, the creativity and the atmosphere - a truly breathtaking scene. It was the ultimate ballet wonderland! And who would have known, I got to actually meet a real-life ballet dancer! Well, a future ballet dancer, that is, in the making. Imagine my sheer delight, you just had to be there!
Well, it was in Paris I took in a fabulous performance at the Opera Garnier, that marvellous Grand Opéra of all Parisian operas. And can you believe this was my third time traveling back to 1870 in one month! My journey to this magical, extravagant period feels ever so special this time, and I just had to come back here to show you. And this day in particular has me mesmerised! Oh, this year 1870, Paris, it was where ballet began in earnest. I just know the Parisians love their ballet, love the tutus and love Parisian chic... and who could blame them?! They love a good party here too! But this Tuesday was not the date for a Parisian party; oh no! Not at all, but I can tell you what happened.
This was a historical date indeed! The very first time ballet took its place in a major Paris theatre, was February 8, 1870 - you could call it The Birth of the Modern Parisian Ballet, you know those ballet shows in those theatres that go on and on. Ballet was always about spectacle. There was so much in the 1870s Parisian culture that influenced the art, not to mention all the fabulous dresses. The new way was so utterly elegant, just swoon-worthy. My darling readers, you know I love me a tutu. But on the date in February 1870, a huge event happened here that's still celebrated today! And that event was... a special one...on February 8, 1870, a truly groundbreaking ballet went up, “La Source”. This dance by Léo Delibes was so popular they'd put it on several times, just think what it means... I just can't wait to get dressed up and be off to a performance right here in this stunning Opera Garnier of Paris. Can you even imagine... I have my tickets for tomorrow all ready and I will be dancing through Paris with a fabulous tutu. This really is a true spectacle!
So my dear reader, I would encourage you to hop into your most beautiful tutu, and try some fancy footwork today - perhaps even get into your ballet clothes, you never know, you could be just one good turn away from stardom! Until next time dearest readers! Stay fabulous...and tutu-tastic!
