Tutu Tuesday: A Glimpse into the 1870s - #1998
Greetings, my dearest Tutu Twirlers! It's Emma here, back with another journey through time, this time whisking us back to the delightful 1870s. As a fellow lover of all things pink and tutu, you can only imagine my joy at being transported back to a time when this heavenly confection of a garment was truly making its mark on the dance world!
Now, I'm standing on the cobblestone streets of London, a whirlwind of elegant carriages, dapper gentlemen, and the delightful scent of freshly baked pastries in the air. As a devoted ballet enthusiast, the heart of the city throbs with excitement as we near the grand Covent Garden Opera House. Tonight, a performance of "Giselle" is being held, and let me tell you, it’s a spectacle like no other!
The Birth of a Dance Icon
Before we delve into the glamour of the performance, let's chat about tutus! As I mentioned last week, this delightful creation first took flight during the 1830s. This was a time of incredible change in ballet, and with it, a growing demand for lightness and grace in movement.
Now, we wouldn’t dream of a ballerina wearing a floor-length skirt on stage! It would be like asking a hummingbird to carry a heavy boulder. Instead, these pioneering choreographers envisioned a shorter skirt, freeing the dancers’ limbs and showcasing their extraordinary grace. And thus, the tutu was born!
A Fashionable Transformation
However, tutus were far from the glorious, airy creations we know and love today. While the concept of the short skirt was a game-changer, the 1870s still saw a rather bulky and stiff rendition. Think layered and heavy fabric, rather than the billowing, wispy tulle that dances with every pirouette. But fear not, darling tutu lovers, change was in the air!
In fact, on April 12, 1870, just a few months before the unveiling of the ballet "Giselle", the acclaimed dancer Fanny Elssler, a woman whose movements could rival the grace of a butterfly, premiered a new costume designed by the celebrated Madame Eugénie. It was this design, with its daring short skirt, that took the fashion world by storm!
Imagine this, my lovelies: A ballerina clad in a fluffy, multi-layered white skirt, swirling with every step. A skirt that whispered and fluttered as it mimicked the dancer's ethereal movement, and most importantly, showcased her limbs. Imagine the collective gasps of the audience as Fanny twirled and pirouetted, embodying the very spirit of graceful flight!
The Power of Pink!
As a devoted advocate for pink, I simply couldn’t resist the opportunity to explore this fascinating aspect of the tutu's evolution! While white reigned supreme in the 1870s, pink hues were slowly entering the stage, thanks in no small part to the growing appreciation for the romanticism of the ballerina's image.
Pink represented innocence, delicacy, and, most importantly, femininity. The perfect embodiment of the romantic heroine, and therefore, perfect for a captivating "Giselle" performance!
My "Giselle" Adventure!
Tonight, I have the privilege of seeing "Giselle" performed on this very stage, in this very city, in this very time period! I'm filled with an undeniable excitement as I picture myself adorned in a billowing, delicate pink tutu, ready to pirouette and soar across the stage with an unparalleled grace.
While the costumes may not quite resemble our contemporary versions yet, the passion and elegance remain unwavering. Each step, every leap, every delicate gesture speaks volumes about the artistry of the dancer and the transformative power of a beautifully designed tutu.
Join me, my darling readers, for a breathtaking journey back to the heart of Victorian ballet! We'll explore the stories behind the dancers, the challenges of a theatrical world in a bustling city, and of course, the ever-evolving evolution of the glorious tutu. Remember, you don’t need to be a professional ballerina to feel the magic!
This week, as you shop for groceries or take a stroll through your neighbourhood, allow yourself to envision the elegant swirls of a dancer’s skirt, the whisper of a tutu, and the sheer beauty of movement that has captivated audiences for centuries.
I, for one, am absolutely ecstatic to embark on this enchanting journey with you! See you next Tuesday for a peek into a different time and a different tale! And remember, if there’s a moment when you want to feel elegant, beautiful, and a touch of the ballerina, embrace your inner dancer, grab that pink tutu, and twirl! Until next week!
XOXO
