Tutu Tuesday: The Rise of the Romantic Tutu! (Post #2008)

Bonjour, darlings! It's Emma here, back again for another delightful dive into the fabulous history of the tutu! It's Tuesday, and that means one thing – #TutuTuesday! And for this week’s romp through history, we’re taking a trip to a rather special day
21st June, 1870. Buckle up, because today we're delving into a world where romance reigns supreme, and the ballet world was transformed – with the Romantic Tutu!

Remember how much I love a good train journey? Today I took a little hop on the steam train over to Paris for a truly magical experience. The romance in the air practically fizzed! Now, if you’ve been following my blog for a while, you know I adore a good tutu. But this, my darlings, is where the story REALLY gets interesting. Before the Romantic tutu, the ballet stage was full of dancers swishing about in long skirts, hindering their beautiful, expressive movements. But not today!

Today, June 21st, 1870, marks a turning point in ballet history, The Paris Opera House opened it’s doors to a new performance, with a dazzling display of a brand new type of tutu that would go on to inspire centuries of ballerinas. The new “Romantic” tutu was everything that the stuffy, restrictive old skirts were not - delicate, flowing, and undeniably feminine. Picture the most beautiful, graceful tutu imaginable. The kind that would twirl effortlessly with every graceful pirouette and perfectly accentuate a dancer's form! A breath of fresh air, indeed.

Today's performance was absolutely divine. Giselle, the story of a heartbroken country girl, had everyone gasping and reaching for their hankies. It's said that a young dancer called Carlotta Grisi, wearing a gorgeous new tulle and gauze skirt, caused quite the stir with her leaps, twirls, and pas de bourrée. I can only imagine the magic in that theatre. Talk about leaving the audience speechless!

What’s fascinating about this, and the Romantic Tutu in general, is that this shift in fashion and dance represented a shift in thought about ballet itself. Suddenly, the world of dance embraced freedom and movement, with a distinct focus on expression and emotion. It was all about a softer, lighter form of ballet - one that was both romantic and beautiful, much like the dancers themselves.

I tell you, these days we can’t get enough of tulle! And the amazing part is, you can absolutely find the same level of excitement for tutus now, whether you're heading to the opera house, watching a ballet on tv, or just popping over to the dance studio.

So, next time you’re dreaming of twirling like the ballerinas of yore, don’t forget to remember those lovely dancers who kicked off this delightful revolution - and the magic that lies within those delicate, airy fabrics. And of course, I am sure to make it back next week with another fabulous tale from the wonderful world of tutus! Au revoir for now, and remember
life's always more fun in a pink tutu!

Until next Tuesday,

Love,

Emma

A Brief Overview of the Romantic Tutu:

  • Made of tulle and gauze: It’s a lighter, airy material than the heavier skirts used before.

    • Shorter than traditional ballet skirts: Allowing for much more leg movement and a greater display of movement, a very delicate, beautiful shape, indeed.

    • The silhouette changed the way we look at dance: Emphasis on graceful lines and delicate, free movements. It changed the very landscape of the performance! It is one of the biggest game-changers in ballet history.

    • Romantic tutu, romantic ballet: The light, airy design helped make dance performances so much more emotional, dreamy, and just downright magical. Think light and airy, graceful ballerinas twirling around like butterflies!

My Romantic Wardrobe Must-Haves:
  1. Delicate lace trim: A beautiful touch on a light fabric dress, or just to trim a new pink tutu.
  2. Gauze and chiffon: The most delightful and romantic fabrics in a pastel shade will take you right back to that Parisian theatre.
  3. Sparkling ballet slippers: Make your feet as beautiful as any of the star ballerinas, with sparkly ballet slippers. It’s never too early, or late, to sparkle! Don't forget to pack your ballet bag !
  4. Romantic headbands or floral tiaras: Add a touch of whimsical and dreamy to any outfit - it just works!
