#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Post 2010 - A Tutu-tiful Time!

Hello dears, and welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com! Today’s #TutuTuesday journey whisks us back to 5th July 1870, a date brimming with Victorian charm, fashion, and – you guessed it – tutus!

As your devoted time-travelling ballerina blogger, I, Emma, just can’t resist a chance to explore the rich history of the ballet tutu. It’s more than just a bit of tulle, my dears, it’s a piece of theatrical history! And believe me, there are stories galore tucked away in every fluttering, frilled layer of a ballet tutu’s past.

This week, our historical ballet tutu venture takes us right to the heart of Paris. Yes, the City of Lights, the home of haute couture, the birthplace of the modern ballet, is where we find ourselves in 1870.

Picture a bustling Parisian street scene. Cobblestones echo with the clip-clop of horse-drawn carriages, the aroma of freshly baked bread wafts from charming bakeries, and the sound of laughter and lively chatter fills the air. This is the world where our beloved tutu holds court.

Tutu Tales: 1870

The ballet tutu, back then, was all about romance. It wasn't the floaty, layered delight it is today. Think elegant, form-fitting skirts, revealing the dancer’s graceful form. Think of exquisite lace and ribbons, hand-stitched with meticulous care. Think of light fabrics, a touch of soft pink, peach, or lavender, reflecting the prevailing colour trends of the day. They emphasised the delicate movement of the dancers, the grace, the elegance of each gesture. It's no wonder this era became synonymous with the graceful ballerinas and their iconic costumes.

The dance world, in 1870, was awash with a wave of new, experimental ballets. This period saw a rise in "whimsical" choreography. Storytelling through movement, conveying a wide spectrum of emotions with dance - that's what defined ballets during this era.

And here’s where we, dear reader, connect the dots. Just imagine - that breathtaking, beautiful choreography required costumes that could move with it. And here’s where the tutu, in its beautiful form of the time, found its place in dance history, contributing to the creation of enchanting ballet masterpieces.

Now, just like my dear Derbyshire neighbours enjoy a good picnic, our 1870 Parisians embraced picnics as a much-loved activity. And a stroll in the park, admiring the lush, fragrant rose gardens? Absolutely!

Think about how these moments mirrored the ballets of the era. The flowing tutus, like blossoms gently swaying in the breeze, spoke of love, joy, and natural beauty - mirroring the essence of the romantic ballets that enchanted Parisian audiences in the late 1800s.

On This Day

Specifically, July 5th, 1870, saw the launch of a captivating ballet in Paris. It showcased the enchanting allure of ballet's grace. I have to confess - I simply cannot resist attending a grand ballet! The thrill of witnessing the story unfold, the delicate elegance of each movement, the magical atmosphere… it’s pure delight, isn’t it?

Today's #TutuTuesday serves as a little reminder. Ballet and its graceful dance form are a beautiful, powerful language that can touch the heart in ways words cannot. And its legacy – woven into every fluttering, exquisite layer of a ballet tutu – continues to inspire fashion, art, and the magic of dance even today!

Let's embrace the magic of the tutu, and never be afraid to wear our hearts (and tutus!) on our sleeves! Join me, dear reader, in embracing the elegance of the ballet world and keeping the #TutuTuesday spirit alive, week after week. Until next time, happy twirling, my loves!

And remember: always wear a pink tutu!

Emma xoxo
