Tutu Tuesday #2015: The Romantic Era and The Rise of the Tutu
Greetings, fellow Tutu enthusiasts! Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-wearing time traveler, straight from the heart of Derbyshire, England, and ready to whisk you away to the magical world of ballet history. Today, we're taking a trip back to the glorious 1870s, a period ripe with romance and artistry that set the stage for the graceful tutu we adore today!
But before we dive in, a quick update from your beloved time traveler: this week, I managed to secure a magnificent role as a swan in a production of "Swan Lake" in Paris. My heart is still fluttering with the memory of the thunderous applause! You just cannot beat the joy of performing on a stage bathed in golden light. I managed to sneak in some incredible shopping, of course, and am thrilled to show you the stunning new pink-and-silver ballet shoes I nabbed. It's been a busy few days!
Now, back to our trip through history. Let's set our time machine to August 9th, 1870. As you may already know, this year, 1870, is incredibly significant for ballet lovers! It's a period often referred to as the Romantic era in ballet, a time when emotions and grace intertwined in breathtaking displays of movement and expression.
Think of elegant ballerinas gracefully leaping across the stage, their bodies a flurry of ribbons and feathers. It was during this era that tutus started evolving into the stunning creations we admire today! Before the 1870s, ballet dresses were more cumbersome, resembling floor-length gowns, limiting the ballerinas' freedom of movement.
Imagine how frustrating that must have been, the weight of yards upon yards of fabric restricting their delicate jumps! But thanks to the visionary vision of influential ballet masters, designers began to experiment with shorter, more form-fitting garments.
Take a moment and envision those ethereal ballerina figures whirling through the air in flowing white skirts. Yes, dear readers, that was the "tutu" – a symbol of pure elegance and graceful movement. It’s believed that the tutu itself actually owes its inspiration to an artistic trend during the romantic period: the emphasis on showcasing feminine fragility.
These tutus weren’t simply beautiful adornments. They were crafted with a new and improved understanding of how a ballerina’s body moves, allowing for the most incredible and technically challenging choreography. It was during this period that techniques like “en pointe,” or dancing on the tips of the toes, gained incredible momentum, thanks, in part, to the creation of specialized footwear and the rise of tutus.
Can you imagine, dear reader, the joy of the ballerinas of the era when they first donned a tutu? They could suddenly pirouette with a grace never before seen! The tutu wasn't just about fashion; it was about freeing the body and unleashing its artistic potential.
There were, of course, various forms of the tutu appearing in different lengths, from the "midi-tutu," hitting right below the knees, to the daring “tutu plat,” resembling a simple skirt, sometimes adorned with sequins and beads. The ballet world was abuzz with innovative interpretations!
If you’ve got the opportunity to catch a production featuring classical ballet from this period, make a date for it, darling! I assure you, you won't be disappointed. Just picturing the delicate pointe work, the beautiful fluidity of the ballerina’s arms as they flow in graceful curves...Oh, to witness the ballet masters’ visions come alive! It truly captures the essence of a captivating and emotional ballet performance.
This is just the tip of the iceberg, my lovelies! This period, with its passion for innovation and artistic expression, set the foundation for the vast array of tutus we have today! We owe much gratitude to the ballerinas and the creators of this iconic piece of dancewear, for it has inspired generations of ballerinas, including your favourite time traveler, Emma!
Until next time, don't forget to embrace your inner ballerina! Put on your most fabulous pink tutu and keep that joy of movement alive!
