Tutu Tuesday: #2022 - A Tutu Time Travel Trip Back to 1870!

Hey darlings! Welcome back to my Pink Tutu blog! It's another Tutu Tuesday, which means it's time to slip into our time machines and journey back to the past for another ballet tutu adventure! 🩰💖

This week, I've whipped up a super-special pink confection for my tutu, inspired by a real fashion icon from the Victorian Era. Remember that glorious, fluffy cloud of a skirt everyone is going wild for in the theatre right now? Yep, that's the crinolinen – the essential silhouette for ladies back in 1870! To be honest, it wouldn’t go amiss on the dance floor either. 😉 Who wouldn't feel like a princess in all those layers of ruffles?

Oh, and speaking of feeling like a princess, the other key piece to my Victorian tutu is all about that beautiful, frilly collar that sits high on the neck – the "jabot"! Such elegance, and such fun. Honestly, I'm already dreaming up a new pink tutu creation with this jabot design at the centre, and my very own Victorian-style bodice to boot!

Anyway, back to our trip down memory lane, my lovely friends!

1870 – The Tutu on the Big Stage!

Remember that dreamy pink ballet costume that got everyone whispering backstage? You know, the one where I'm sporting that flowing, frilly, ultra-feminine number? Well, imagine this! In the glorious year 1870, the very concept of a dancer twirling and leaping in such a free-flowing tutu – let's be honest, there would have been tutus in the ballet world by then, but perhaps nothing as dramatically beautiful as what we see today. That was a real revolution! It was the very year Marie Taglioni took centre stage at La Scala, performing "La Sylphide."

Can you even imagine that kind of spectacle? The audience! The lights! And oh, that gorgeous ballerina! There was something absolutely mesmerising about the movement and elegance. And honestly, don't even get me started on those dainty pointe shoes. The ultimate symbol of grace and strength! I wouldn't be surprised if I spotted a couple of ballet students from Derbyshire in the crowd, practicing those “pas de bourrée” (or even, dare I say it, a “jeté”) to remember those magic moves. Who knows? Maybe even a budding little ballerina who dreamt of becoming like Marie herself! 💖

But enough of these flights of fancy – let's get back to the real world, shall we?

What else was going on in 1870?

We’ve had a little look back into the past for some historical tidbits. Well, 1870 wasn’t just about ballet, oh no!

  • We had The Franco-Prussian War starting – not exactly a recipe for tutus, eh?
  • A great lady by the name of Annie Besant (did you know, she was later president of the Theosophical Society – now there's an intriguing link to ballet) took her first baby steps in that year!

It makes me wonder if even with the big international events happening around her, that sweet, new-born baby Annie ever dreamt of twirling and leaping on the stage in a beautiful tutu.

Oh, I do so love this kind of history - where ordinary and extraordinary collide! I’m not sure what's more fascinating, the thought of Theosophical Society or seeing those tutus fluttering as the ballerina makes those incredible jumps and leaps.

It's Tutu-Time!

Alright, ladies, this week we’re really taking a plunge into this fantastic world of dance and design, where a tutu becomes more than just clothing - it’s a whole story. And a story we can rewrite every day, to be our own version of a danceable, fun and fabulous history.

So, why don’t you pop over to www.pink-tutu.com for a little peek into our pink, ballet wonderland, and join the conversation? Let's share some tips and tales of the world of ballet and how we can each create our own stunningly beautiful, history-making pink tutus! 💖

Have a fabulously fantastic Tutu Tuesday, my dear friends, and remember, a little sprinkle of tutu magic can transform any day into a masterpiece!

Until next time,

Emma 💕🩰
