#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Post 2058 - 1871-06-06
Hello, my darlings! Emma here, your ever-so-pink-tutu-clad guide to the fabulous world of ballet and all its glorious history. Welcome back to another thrilling #TutuTuesday!
It's a lovely sunny day here in Paris. Iām actually in a fab cafĆ© in the Latin Quarter ā you know the one, it's near the Sorbonne! ā sipping on a delicious mint tea (well, it has to be a healthy pink tinge to match my outfit!) and preparing to take you on a whimsical journey back in time to June 6th, 1871.
Today, we're whisked back to a time when the tutus we know and love were still taking their first steps towards becoming the sartorial icons they are today. Imagine, dear reader, a world where ballet dancers still wore fluffy white dresses that looked like puffy meringue cakes. Itās a bit of a disaster, frankly, not enough pink to be considered āen pointe,ā you know?
Thankfully, my darlings, fashion was in flux. A little bit of "pink-tastic" innovation was in the air, and designers were experimenting with all sorts of exciting new silhouettes and styles, which, thankfully, included some lovely splashes of pink in my beloved tutus.
Before we delve into the details of the ballet world in 1871, allow me to indulge in some personal sartorial observations. Today, I am sporting the most exquisite shade of blush pink tulle for my tutu, which compliments my lovely floral-patterned tea dress perfectly. Oh, and have you seen my new, stunning pink parasols? They're just divine for those lovely summer strolls through the parks of Paris! Don't you agree, darlings?
Speaking of Paris, it's where it's all happening this June in 1871. You see, the Paris Opera, known simply as lāOpĆ©ra then, has announced the premiere of a brand-new ballet: āCoppĆ©liaā!
The name sounds awfully familiar, doesn't it? Well, my darlings, you know you love a bit of dramatic backstory, and this oneās a real beauty. You see, our ballet mistress, the legendary Mme. Carvalho, was determined to showcase the exceptional talent of a new prima ballerina called Marie Taglioni. Taglioni is, of course, from the legendary Taglioni family of dancers, so expectations are understandably sky high! But then the drama unfolded! Another prima ballerina, Rosita Mauri, refused to play second fiddle to Taglioni. As a result, Mauri was fired, the ballet company went on strike and a stand-in prima ballerina called Augusta Brunhilde was thrown into the role. The chaos! I wouldn't have missed it for the world. You just know that the gossip mills are working overtime.
But, for our fashion-loving hearts, itās a total ballet delight. Think, darlings, about the costuming possibilities! All that tulle, all that lace, all that gorgeous fabric that needs a beautiful pink shade for its finishing touch. The ballet world is on fire right now!
Now, back to our trip in time. June 1871: A time of revolution in Paris, a time of innovation and daring design, and a time where a lovely, new ballet called āCoppĆ©liaā is about to steal the stage with all its whimsical delights. It is also the time, darlings, when our beautiful tutus are beginning to evolve! Weāre seeing an elegant transition away from the fussy white dresses, as the designers start to explore colours, especially the magnificent pink that makes my heart skip a beat! Iād bet good money that a new, exquisitely pink tulle ballet skirt was even worn during the debut performance of "CoppĆ©lia." We are, after all, talking about the legendary Marie Taglioni, wouldnāt you expect the absolute pinnacle of fashion in a truly lovely shade of pink?
I adore these ballet āGolden Ageā designs with their long, graceful skirts. It was also the time that our tutus became lighter and more flowing, allowing dancers to express their artistry with exquisite grace and elegance. Talk about dancing like the clouds are floating along!
I'm excited, my darlings. The ballet world is undergoing a wonderful makeover! I can feel a strong dose of the pink-tastic evolution that is yet to come in our future tutus. Who needs stiff, boring, fluffy meringue-like garments, when you can dance around in something beautifully pink and elegant? Now, excuse me while I try to buy the entire stock of pink tulle in Paris! I just need to figure out how to cram all these pretty creations into my suitcase. See you next week!
